shot my 2nd year production 77/44 yesterday....fun rifle!
« on: March 08, 2013, 09:38:18 PM »
I'm happy with the accuracy of my  1998 Ruger 77/44 Walnut/Blue rifle. Finally got to the range yesterday and shot it a good bit at 50 and 100 yards. Only had factory ammo, all 240 grain solid and hollow point. Different manufacturers made for better/worse groups. Such a light little rifle was a bit difficult to hold as well as I would have liked on the bench.....better fitting front rest bag for the skinny forend would be better.
Anyway I got 5 shot groups of about 4 and 5" at 100. I'm actually not to disapointed as the 4X Leupold was probably letting me hold with a 1 or 2" error, and my being wobbly on the rest bag probably made for another inch of error. I just might put an 8x on it or even a T36 scope just for target 'final' testing for what it can do. Definately got to get a better forend bag arangment for the rest.
This little rifle is just fun to shoot. I did not have time to load up the Keith 250 gr SWCs over 2400 powder but will have those for testing next trip. I like this little gun...and hope it does well with cast because jacketed bullets are too expensive to shoot a LOT of!

Congrats on you 77/44 ! I bought one of the new(er) all weather 77/44's a few years ago. You are right, it is one fun gun to shoot, and a delight to carry, to the point I LOOK for reasons to carry it. it. It has become my favorite rifle, I use it as my main deer rifle, have taken 3 deer with it so far (including my biggest buck ever this year), and have used it on coyotes on occasion.
Mine actually shoots best with 300 grain hardcast bullets, with groups of 2 1/2 -3 1/2 " at 100 yards. Not tack driving accuracy, but definately minute of deer.
I have seen people on various forums complain that these guns serve no purpose than can not be served better by other guns. that may be true, but out of everything I own, this one just does EVERYTHING well enough, that I choose it over others.
Enjoy
