Thank you, "Captain Oversensivity," for turning a post made in light-hearted jest into a tearful, "kum-bay-ah" plea for a civility which was already in place.

I CAN'T BELIEVE this ACTUALLY needs explaining, but I'll take a deep breath and do so.

The tenor of that post was a follow-on to earlier banter about the 7MM-08 in comparison to some calibers which are far and away more than necessary for most comparable hunting work.  Some members have interjected some "dead is dead" and "no such thing as overkill" type comments, of which I (and others) take the other rhetorical side.

I know, what was I thinking, injecting some humor into an ONLINE CHAT FORUM FULL OF MANLY MEN WHO HUNT.

Please accept my apology.  In fact, just for the record I want you to know it's nice to know there are Prius-driving, card-carrying ACLU members who own guns and like to frequent forums and discuss it with all of us manly guys who easily let things roll off our backs. :o

On a side note, please tell all the gun writers (who I offended) and gun and ammunition makers (who I also offended) that they can wipe their tears, as I do apologize.  There will be no more guy-talk ribbing coming from me.  Just serious, ever-so-sensitive talk about weapons which kill.

Sorry nudge but i sometimes tire of guys beating up swampy. I get on him myself when his posts are off the wall but its seems that every time he says anything someone twist it around or trys to make him look nuts. As to driving a priu or being a card carrying member of the aclu. Im sure theres one on a gun fourm somewhere I doubt youd ever get the frutcake to admit it. As to captain sensitivity goes. You OBIVOUSLY havent read many of my posts. As to what you post in the future im sure not losing any sleep over it.  ;)

I own both and love both. I was a lefty for a long time so my rifles were of different actions except for a bolt. I love my guns (for certain jobs) for their action, fit and feel over their caliber. All of the calibers I own will take deer. But, which feels the best in that scenario.

Now that I am a righty, thanks to a 3 day bolt action rifle course, 450 rounds of .308 and new Winchester M70 Featherweight, my collection is complete...for a while anyway. (by the way, I was a lefty and right eye dominant. That is why I switch to being a righty after shooting for 25 years as a lefty).

My 7mm-08 in a Browning BLR lever gun is a completely different shooting experience than the Remington model 7400 autoloader in .30-06. I never needed to make a decision based on caliber, but on feel and comfort. But, that's my cup of tea over what caliber is better than another.

Although, my M70 will get a lot more use than my other rifles now. Guess I really missed out on the bolts over the last 25 years (or maybe it's the M70...won't know until I get another bolt I guess). But, I never liked the selection in Left Hand model bolts.

back to the original question.....

It appears i fall into the "McCoy" category as i prefer my 7mm/08 over my 30-06.

My reasons being, I normally only hunt deer (mulies in Idaho), and have yet to get to go elk hunting.

my 7/08 is in a nice lil m70 feather weight compact which has a 20inch barrel and when compared to a marlin 30-30 (336A if i recall)

is only 2 inches longer and weighs approx. the same as said marlin...oh and the 7 has a scope included in weight.

if i were to go elk hunting i expect it would do the job quite nicely,  i fall into shot placement is key opinion type.  with the 7/08 i am more likely to shoot it enough to be proficient with it. unlike the 30-06 which in the particular gun i own isn't that fun to shoot. in fact with a browning BAR being the exception i have yet to shoot a 30-06 i liked to shoot.

oh also for no apparent reason i just don't particularly like 30cal. i like smaller and i like bigger go figure :)

and the 7mm/08 (in my opinion) looks just right for the size, and brass can easily be pirated from the ever common 308 (insert evil laughter)

So if you base your decisions on recoil... Obvious of the two is 7mm-08.  Less powder, less bullet, less.... Everything. Smaller package all around. Winner!

Ok, so now if you base your decision on BC the 7mm with a 140 is doing better than the -06 with a 150... But what if your -06 has a Barnes tipped TSX with a GIANT BC of .546??? -06 wins??  Well BC is just a bore size to bullet size comparison, so none is really better than the other. If you say one is better than the other, by definition, you can build a better more efficient aerodynamic bullet for the second with a higher BC.  So... That's all even.

Now, with bc's equalled out, and more powder and bullet, the -06 is yes, gonna have absolutely more power than the 7mm-08. Winner!

So we have two winners.  Now for deer, do you need more than the 7mm-08?  No you don't. So "more" power with the -06 doesn't get you anything.  So the 7mm-08 wins based on less recoil. Buuuuuuttt if you have your deer rifle and "maybe" wanna hunt a moose with it... You don't maybe wanna hunt with a 7mm-08 throwing 140 grains of metal.  You want that -06 you can definitely throw 170-200 grains no problem.

So we will call it like a concealed carry weapon.

7mm-08=deer
30-06=deer+p

:D

Oh and I guess I should call my opinion - deer+p all day long.  Heck I just bought a .338 ultra mag. Rhino+p all day!
