Obama's insurance requirement not the only mandate    Associated Press Posted on April 1, 2012 at 6:01 AM
Updated today at 9:01 AM        WASHINGTON (AP) — The individual health insurance mandate that the Supreme Court is reviewing isn't the only federal dictate involving health care.
There's a Medicare payroll tax on workers and employers, for example, and a requirement that hospitals provide free emergency services to indigents.
Health care is full of government dictates, and some can be seen as more intrusive than the requirement in President Barack Obama's health care law.
Most of the mandates apply to service providers such as hospitals and insurers.
One federal health care mandate that affects just about everybody: Workers must pay a tax to finance Medicare, which collects about $200 billion a year.
Even the uninsured pay the Medicare tax.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wondered last week how some social policy mandates could be constitutional and others not.

Powderman, do you have a link for the source of the above?

I'm curious, I do not recall the Supremes hearing any arguments regarding the other issues listed. Although it is entirely possible that any decision they hand down could affect those issues

Thanx Powderman,

So it seems that the SC is considering these things as arguments for/against the current case before, not actually considering them per se. Ergo these are not before the court to make a desicion on them. Although.....the courts ruling may ultimately have an affect on them.

They also have the power to talk about a case in their ruling that they haven't exactly taken up.  In announcing their decision on obama care I wouldnt be the least surprised to see a discussion about Medicare and/or Medicaid as well.  Wouldn't expect them to overturn those programs however.

Interesting.. medicare/medicade supported by taxes....Obamacare supported by taxes! We could easily lose this one! :'(

However....you are not forced by the government to actually use /purchase medicare/medicade like you will be forced to buy Obamacare or pay a penalty......yup, I can see us losing our collective butts here. Or maybe the whole socialistic system may fall......somehow, I doubt it though. :-\

CUTS. Not sure about that, I talked a friend of mine into signing up for ss at age 70. He couldn't get med coverage for another year because he didn't sign up for it at 65, all he could draw was $712. A year later they automaticly sent him a card and took it out of his chk, he now gets $526 a month. He was so upset he tore the card up.  POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Hmmm? I know/knew several older people who did not/do not use it. One of them, a retired school teacher of all things, has stated that he would rather die than use social security or medicare. He was POed all of his life that they were "stealing from my paycheck and I'll be damned if I will give them the satisfaction of doling it out to me now like they're doing me some kind of big favor!"

He had his military retirement, his teachers pension, and what he had saved/invested most of his life, and that's what he lived on, along with his own health insurance that he choose for himself and paid for with his own money. And he lived pretty good too, probably could have lived even better if he had all the money stolen from him by "the government" during his lifetime!

When he died he left his children a pretty substantial estate to divy up......and he left me a nice old shotgun. :) He was one of the few men I admired and I'm glad I had him for a friend!
