These are some of my scouts on a recent hike, beginning, middle, and as you will notice, the end of the hike.

It wasn't all that far, but according to one scout it was uphill all the way...and back! :D

Our next little adventure will add two miles.  After that one, we will increase to 7.  All in all, there are 56 miles of trail we will cover, if possible in the next year.

Very cool! I'm overdue for taking my scout den on a hike.

Yep, add cell phones, facebook, computers, etc. Frankly for a lot of kids scouting is too much like work, it has rules too, which some don't like. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I totally agree. My ex-wife got my three kids into electronics when they were young so she wouldn't have to bother with them. Electronics were a babysitter for her so she could do other things besides be a mother.
Fast forward to the present, we're now divorced. I have custody of my 3 kids. They're still addicted to electronics but I've kept them all in scouting. My 13 and 16 year old girls are in Girl Scouts and my son is in Webelos. I'm very grateful for scouting and cherish every moment spent with them.

It may not be cheap, but it can be affordable.  We sell popcorn every year, and the den gets a large percentage of the sales.  We have public sale days at Walmart, and if the boys show up in uniform, and participate, after about two days they will have enough "scout bucks" to pay their dues, buy uniforms, pay for camp, etc.

The pack furnishes the kits for the pinewood derby cars and whatever crafts they do in den.

When we hike, I give a list to the parents of what to send along...then I go ahead out of my pocket and buy enough for them all because only a few if any will bring anything.

I get a little miffed at the parents, but have to keep it in check for the boy's sake.  Some of them want to do well, so I don't mind helping.  Last year I bought some shirts and such so some of those who said they didn't have money could come to the popcorn sales and make some.  Those scouts didn't come to the sale.  From now on, I will furnish some "loaner" shirts they can put on at the sale site and then give back.  Shirts are $39.00 each so I know thats hard for some, but with just a little effort, it can cost them nothing but time.

I've loaned tents, lanterns, etc. and its the PARENTS who I have to chase down to get them back.

So I would agree, parents are the biggest obstacle to their son's success in most cases.

If I see a boy and his parents are trying, I don't mind going the "extra mile", but having been snake bit a couple times, I'm learning to do so with stipulations.

Scouting is a wonderful program for this day and age, when so many "men" don't know how to be men, and so many kids live with mama only.  It teaches self reliance, personal responsibility, and yes, manhood and wraps it all up in fun!  It's more needed today than in 1910 when it began.

yes rotten parents.  then you add peer pressure where they call scouts, sissies etc. it's tough.
the girl scout troop at my wifes school fell apart because of these things, and boy scouts wasn't even tried.
but of course my county is a little different from most.

A scout is Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. And always hungry.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret. The LDS Church (Mormon) Told us anybody could join the scout pack or troop and the church would pay for it. Parents may be asked to help some at camp time. But no dues.

I wouldn't mind if my church helped some kids that might not otherwise be a scout.
