Are Nylon 66's getting this high in price?
« on: February 24, 2012, 10:08:24 AM »
I stopped by a local pawn shop the other day. They had a nice looking dark green 66 but the asking price was $599. :o  Are they getting anywhere close to that kind of money?

Gun show 2 weeks ago a guy had a black one like new, unfired and in the box on the table for $500 so I kept walking.  I bought one 3 years ago that was very rough but complete and usable from a pawn shop in Indianapolis for $85.

All Nylon rifles are NOT created equally.

The Seneca Green color (not the later/brighter green) was the rarest of the Nylon colors, ergo bringing the highest return from collectors.

I sold a pristine example, over 8 years ago, for $400 - and since there haven't been any more made since well before then, would you think that the price actually go down in the last 8 years ?

Pristine, non-CBC,  Mohawk Brown examples easily bring $400 today - because the color is/was more common than Seneca Green.

Yep, my buddy was just passed one down from his grandpa.  He was letting his 15 year old kid take it out a lot.  I explained to him what I'd found and they decided to get him a .22 Marlin for plinking.  I did at least get to shoot it the one day.  Brought back a lotta memories shooting rabbits in my teens.  ;)  My buddy's dad always kept these in the bed of his truck so when we stopped and let the dogs go, we just reached in and grabbed one.  ;)

I have seen two in the last few months. Both have been in the same store. Both were the common brown version. The first even had the factory sticker on the butt and was priced at $450. The second one was in very good condition and it was $450.

Nylon 66's have doubled in price since The American Rifleman ran a nostalgic look back at Remington's dandy Zytel stocked rifle a couple of years ago. Still, there are bargains to be had for sure if one is willing to do some searching. A run of the mill Mohawk Brown Nylon 66 should fetch $250-$350 for shooters and higher for unfired in the box, labeled and tagged. The black and chrome version is called Apache Black and can be a bit higher, but a good shooter at $400 or less is out there. The other two 66 varieties are more rare and more expensive. The Black Diamond is just as the name implies. The white diamond on the other 66's is black as is the stock on a blued gun. It can command $800. The rarest of the 66's is the Seneca Green. It's appearance is similar to the Mohawk Brown but has the dark green swirls and tint and be priced $800 and higher. Again, local stores may have a jewel on the shelf to be had for a bargain, just be sure of what you're buying!  There are other versions too, the Model 77 Apache was made for K-Mart and is clip fed. So is a similar model in the brown stock that is a 77 also and it's reconfigured self as a 10C. There's a few lever action Model 76, and the Apache Black version can be $2000!  To round out the family, the Model 10, 11, and 12 can put a collector in the poor house trying to complete one's collection. There's even a 66GS that shoot .22 Shorts and was designed as a "Gallery Special" for shooting galleries. You can search the words "Nylon 66 and find several sites with more information on these great old guns. They are a blast to shoot and anyone that enjoys plinking should have one or more of these in their safe.

I have a good video in my archives (Louie Mcgoo) who shows how to disassemble/reassemble the 66 for cleaning. Louie is also the pres of a 66 forum and urges that one should not pay more than $100 for your common mohawk brown butt feed models as the production numbers were at or exceeded 1 Mil. Seneca green and black diamond go higher of course.

With that being said, I still have yet to see a gun show 66 go for less than $235 so your best bet is going to be to locate an individual who has one in the back of the closet. This is going to be a tough thing to do and would probably be by chance.

I would not accept $400 for mine but simply because it grew up with me and is still an excellent shooter.

I also have the Rem date codes for the 66 for those interested in the month and year their rifle was produced.

  i would suppose there are two major impetuses driving it;
 1) The rarity of certain models
 2) Nostalgia by those who had them as a youngster

What's NOT as valuable are the Nylon's made by CBC (Brazil) on the machinery Remington sold them after they discontinued the line.

As I posted above - all Nylon rifles are were not created equal........................  caveat emptor.

Ranger;
  If a person wants a new rifle of that style..do those Brazilian guns shoot/function as well as the originals ?

I've seen quite a few 66's, but not the Nylon 11 that I bought new in 64. Ammo for the clip feed bolt action 11 lasted longer. I wonder what the mod. 11 is going for they have to be more rare.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

My CBC Nylon 66 shoots well (never had a Remington-branded one) and functions flawlessly, so I'd say yes.

Edited because some of the info may not have been correct.

I deliberately never bought a CBC Nylon rifle, since I knew that the guns were made on the same old machinery that Remington shipped down to SA after using it for producing Remmy Nylons for 20-odd years.

Things like that happen... I understand that originally, Smith & Wesson set up Taurus in Brazil..but with new tools.

Then you missed out, Rangr44, and you were mistaken besides (as was I) !  The CBC Nylons started production in 1962, which is just 3 years after Remmy started production here.  Remington didn't cease production until the mid-late '80s.

I have one of those ugly brown ones I bought at a yard sale for 35.00 and stevens single barrel shotgun for 25.00 about two years ago, and good running garden tiller for 50.00, so deals are out there just get up early and ask if they have any hunting items for sale,
