School me on S&W RG
« on: March 27, 2012, 04:12:41 PM »
Good evening gents. I have a need for info on a 1979 S&W RG 3 1/2". Got a guy wanting to do some trading and he says it is the before mentioned model. I googled it and only found 2 pics of a RG. Is this the model? I thought all the older Smiths had # models. Any and all info is greatly appericated.

OK, he brought the firearm today for me to look at. It IS NOT a S&W, it is a RG brand 38 spl. Supposidly owned by S&W at some point. It has made in the USA on it and he said he checked the ser.# and it dated to '79. It is not in the best of shape looks wise, but seems to lock up tight. He also has a RG 38 spl derrianger that has made in Germany on it. I have never heard of them. He's wanting to trade me both of them for my 1st gen Glock 21. Opinions on these side arms????????

I'm late chiming in here, and it sounds like you've already discovered that RGs fit the old designation "suicide specials". These were some of the lowest quality throwaway guns.

I was helping my wife go through her dad's file cabinets after he passed away.  In the very bottom of one of the file drawers I saw an RG box. I opened it up and there laid a brand new RG .38 spec. I opened the cylinder and there were 5 .38 special rounds and an empty chamber. He owned a hardware store and carried a pretty good collection of guns. He was so cheap (everyone in town agrees to that) that he picked an RG over any brand of handgun made. But he wasn't stupid. He had the hammer resting on an empty chamber. It rests in my gun safe--with 6 empty chambers.
