Layman question Accutip / SST - same construction ?
« on: April 07, 2012, 08:21:43 PM »
My cousin and I were talking last week and he mentioned the Remington's premier Accutip was the same Bullet as the Hornady SST. Is this an accurate statement from my cousin John?

and if so

Why would Remington call the accutip a "premier Round" and charge about 5 bucks more a box over Hornady's SST ?
I thought the  SST was positioned somewhere in between an Interlock and a true Bonded bullet? but definitely not a premier Bullet . am I wrong in my understanding of the SST and Accutips?

I would say no they are not the same bullets, but what information is your cousin using to confirm his theory.

Remington is most likely attempting to clone the Nolser Accubond by closely naming it the Accutip.

Is the Accutip bonded?
He is saying both are just interlocked polymer tipped bullets. only difference is the the color of the tip.

Here is cutaway of Accutip

Here is cutaway of SST

I guess the Remington Accutip isn't a bonded bullet, but I still don't believe Remington would use the Hornady SST (Super Shock Tip) bullet and put their name on it.

Maybe they bought some rights from Hornady to copy/clone the Hornady SST bullet since the photos look similar.

The Remington Accutip and the Hornady SST are also very simular to the Nosler Ballistic Tip or Accubond bullets, but lack the solid base.

If you go by internet scuttlebutt, they are made by Hornady.... but I doubt that claim. More realistically it would be Barnes as they are both owned by the Freedom Group. Barnes is more than capable of making them. But you can't rule out a union with Nosler either. Nosler and Winchester got together to make the fabulous Combined Technologies bullets so it would be a natural thing for Nosler to make Remington performance bullets as well. Unless you have an inside source at Remington, I doubt you ever know for sure. Heck, it could be ATK too.

looking at both together even the crimp (interlock rings) look the same on the Accutip and the SST.
I just find it interesting that Rem promotes as Premier and positions the cartridges 5.00
bucks a box more off the shelf over the SST which Hornady positions in the middle so
to speak of their line.
