Raging bulls, super redhawks, CCI primers, and misfires.
« on: April 09, 2012, 11:19:28 PM »
So in both of these guns I've heard of misfires with CCI primers due to their harder cups (as well as smith J/k frames in smaller rounds) and was wondering what you guys have seen or done to alleviate this problem.

I know the obvious solution: use federal primers. Which this solution works, I've tried it. The only problem I've ever had with my raging bull is light strikes on CCI small rifle magnum primers.  It has always set off everything else put through it.

So far I've cleaned and polished the inside so it's slick like a babies bottom, I replaced the mainspring to make sure I'm getting good strong spring.  I've looked into getting a replacement.  Nobody makes a specific high power spring for the raging bull so I've ordered a couple of other springs to see if they will work.  I also ordered a lengthened firing pin to see if it would help.... but I'm not sure if it will fit, because even though it is the same design, it isn't actually made for this gun.  -More experimentation necessary.  I might be able to shim the spring ever so slightly, but not much, it goes close to fully squished when the hammer is back.

I've checked to make sure the firing pin is golden moving slick and the spring isn't too tight but still gives full return.

All I can really do is blame CCI.   ;)   Because all I want to know is that my firearm will shoot any ammo any time any where, and they have to go making harder primer cups.

It does only happen on double action because of the hammer not getting the same travel as in single action mode.  I've thought of looking to modify the double action sear so it engages the trigger sear for just a little longer.

So any other ideas?

I think it may just be a "Primer" issue. Have had some with what looked like light strikes in some rifles I have never had a problem with. Same guns are shooting everything else fine. I traded them for some Winchester primers and problem went away. Guy that got them has had same problem. He knew I was having the problem when he traded and was one that offered to trade. Try a different primer before doing anything else to the guns.

Oh I already know it is the primer.  CCI primers.  All others work, CCI primers just have harder cups.

What I am trying to do is make sure that under any circumstance it will fire, even with CCI primers.

something not discussed in the gunsmithing area, when I was needing to re-stock on primers for various handgun loads I use, all the big name brands were out of stock.  I tried Wolf primers, then ordered two cases of large and small pistol primers.  They work great without being too hot nor too hard
