457 magnum? Never had heard of it before.
« on: January 24, 2012, 10:10:24 AM »
While I was in a pawn shop today there was a like new Marlin SS guide rifle in a 457 Magnum. Never had heard of that one before. It was stamped on the barrel. The clerk showed me some rounds that came with the rifle. It will also shoot 45-70.
Anyone here familiar with this cartridge?

Are they just renaming the 45-70 hot loads 457 mag?
So if you want the bottom end of the 458 Mag loads you ask for them and do not get confussed with trapdoor loads and ruin an old hinge gun and be called lefty for ever more?  Or did they add .10 of an inch so it will not chamber in the 45-70 guns?

It's a WWG gun, basically a 45-70 loaded to a longer COL, Hodgdon has data for it.

In reference to the other thread,  "tactical 30-30 lever action"...or whatever it's titled:  Now THAT'S what a tactical levergun should be!    ;)

Its kind of a gimmick for wild west guns.  You can duplicate those loads with heavy loads in starling brass pretty easily.  They do pretty decent work though and if the price is right it would be worth picking up.

Those take downs are nice... I have to take a peep at them every time I go by the shop.....

The 457 mag will shoot both WWG's proprietary .457 mag or .45-70.  so just think of it as a 45-70+p  ;)

They do both chamberings for the guide gun, and the take down version.
