.357 accuracy?
« on: July 24, 2012, 08:42:40 AM »
What kind of accuracy can you expect from a 6.5'' ruger new model blackhawk in .357? I just bought a used one from my local shop and was curious because I have had good accuracy from a taurus tracker and a gp 100  both in 6'' and .357.If it is about the same I will be a happy camper.

Find the right bullet weight and powder combination and if it's like the one's I've owned it will be a great shooter. Don't own a 357 right now but have 3 Rugers in 45 LC. Each of them likes something different. Feed your BH different stuff until it shoots like you want it to.

Thanks for the reply I may have  to use it instead of a shotgun due to shoulder surgery this year.

Ouch on the surgery.   :-\  My 357 Blackhawks liked the 158 gr on up. I think the last one liked the 170 gr keith style SWC's the best. I gave it to my adopted son as a Christmas present. Within acceptable ranges a 357 works great on critters up to and including whitetails. Although with the perfect shot it would take a hog but some of the ones on my hunting land are in the 300-350 lb range and a perfect shot doesn't always present itself. I'll stick with my 45 LC loaded hot and heavy for them.

THE most accurate .357M cartridge ever produced is the plain old Remington JHP 158grn.  I've never had a .357 that wouldn't group that round into an inch at 25 yards from a rest.  It's the very best, accuracy wise.  Killed some deer with that facotry load.  However, I don't know that it is the best for everything.  The much praised 125 grn. JHP is supposedly the best man stopper available.  That might be so.  But from its advent, the .357M was built to fire 158 grain loads, and I know for sure and for certain you can't do better than the Remington load.

That's what I like to hear guys and I agree on the 158 grainers ,I shot them in the other guns and used 158 jsp on deer under 40 yds with the tracker and had good results.Never used the gp100 on deer and sold it to a co-worker who wanted it back,it was his originally.I should have kept that one LOL.The Taurus I liked, but I like the beefiness of Ruger products.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk in 357 Mag, it love the 158 gr. and 180 gr. the best.  I have been shooting the 158 gr. Hornady XTP's and some Montana Bullet Works 158 gr. Both work great.

stevinator:  357s seem to be very accurate with a wide range of bullets.  I have used 4" revolvers successfully on 200 yd metallic silhouette courses with the 158 gn, 168 gn, 173 gn and 200 gn cast slugs.  And, of course, there are always the jacketed bullets.  My current preferred 357 load is a 200 gn Keith style swc over WW296, from a 3.5" S&W.  Very accurate.

Ditto on the Rem 158 sp my 7.5 BH also likes the Lee cast 158gr  when the shooter does his job 2-4" at 50 standing! ;D   The only thing other then Jackbunny taken with it so far has been a big yote at about 60 yards ! The Rem 158 gr did a number on him. :)

For deer I would stick with hardcast, JSPs or  Hornady's FP version of their XTP. 158gr or heavier.  The gun's accuracy should be better than yours with the right loads. Stick with the range you can consistently put all your shots in a 8'' circle and refrain from taking poor angle shots.
