Perfectly Preserved Woolly Mammoth Discovered in SiberiaBy Melissa Knowles | Trending Now – 23 hrs ago        "Like" us on Facebook.com/TrendingNow and follow Trending Now on Twitter: @Knowlesitalland @YahooTrending
Scientists in search of ancient tusks made a startling discovery. They uncovered the nearly perfectly preserved remains of a woolly mammoth in northern Siberia. The juvenile mammoth is believed to be more than 10,000 years old, but was only 3 to 4 years old when it died. It is unlike any other mammoth that has been unearthed before.
The scientists reveal their discovery, which they named "Yuka," in a BBC documentary. Yuka has strawberry blond hair, unlike the dark hair that other mammoths have been found to have. Plus, Yuka's footpads are incredibly well preserved, but some of his bones are missing.
Scientists are trying to determine how Yuka died. They believe it's possible that it could be due to human interaction with the animal. It's plausible that ancient humans may have stolen the mammoth from lions. If their theory proves correct, this will be the first relatively complete mammoth to show evidence of human interaction.

  Powderman,
Thanks for this great post.  I love it.
Now, scientists have a fresh new set of DNA strands to clone with, which will add to a diverse gene pool for these animals when the cloning starts.   Just image, 20 years from now herds of these great beasts could be roaming wild across Siberia again.   Talk about a great hunting trip!

I'm pretty sure that somebody had a story a few weeks ago that the ruskies wanted to clone the thing. That would be a sight to see. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I believe the story is several years old. I watched an hour long show on TV about it over a year ago.

Ya think the 375H&H will be the minimum like with elephant or will we need to make some better big bores like a shoulder fired 50 BMG.

Gentlemen,
In all seriousness, you may rest assured that the Wooly Mammoth will be cloned.  There is sufficient DNA to work through the entire genome sequence, and all it takes is the computer time to do it.  The Mammoth is about 99.9% identical in genetic make up to the African elephant, so if there are any little blips or missing pieces, they will easily be filled in with elephant DNA.  An egg from a female elephant will be removed, then the existing DNA extracted, and then the Mammoth DNA inserted.  The egg will be put back in the female, and in a few months she will give birth to a Mammoth.
It is all pretty easy, just a little expensive.  Happily, the Russians don't have pee-in-their-pants environmental and ethical debates over things that make sense.  They just do it.  If herds are placed back in Siberia, it will provide yet another source of income to that area.
The real debate is whether someone should clone a Neaderthal. There is sufficient DNA to do it, and they have almost finished the sequencing.  I hope it never happens. Since they are not humans, this would not violate current laws against cloning human beings.  Look forward to new laws, forbidding the cloning of pre-humans or near humans, including the Neanderthals.
(It was thought to be a silly movie at the time, but take a look at the movie called  Iceman, which came out over 20 years ago.  I think it would be a pretty accurate and sorry picture of what would happen if we cloned one.)
 Best, Mannyrock

Not on the show I watched Charlie. It just showed them digging it out of the ice. They took it away using one of those huge Russian helicopters to be thawed and studied.

BILL. Thanks. I have mixed feeling about cloning. A part of me sees it as playing God, another part, the curious side, wants to see live wooly mammoths, sabre toothed tigers, etc. It has been done successfully with several animals and probably, very quietly with humans. It is said it could be an answer to a food shortage, and for spare parts for humans, the last part I really have a problem with that. Big difference between cloning a human and grafting 2 types of trees together. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

In summary, the explorers club had some mammoth as an appetizer once.

I have read about that.  Later when one of the members (someone famous but I don't remember who) was asked what it tasted like; he said "It tasted a lot like rotten meat."
