Lateral movement
« on: April 14, 2012, 01:32:14 PM »
How much lateral movement is acceptable with the action open? I just noticed when i open my 45-70 bc there is some movement, but none when locked up. How concerned should I be?

Unless you get FTF's from off center strikes, I wouldn't worry.  My .45-70 BC has some side to side slop, but hasn't caused any issues yet.  If you are too concerned you could make some side shims to hold it centered.  ;)

It generally from a loose fitting forend.

As Tacklebury said, if its shooting well don't fix whats not broken...  ;)

Ok thanks guys. I did switch forends recently which is probably why I never noticed it til now. It locks up like a rock and shoots pretty good from what limited time ive dedicated to it.

Forend fit controls the fit when the action is open, adding a shim (I use aluminum furnace tape) between the spacer and forend will tighten it right up. If the barrel isn't loose when the action is locked up is what counts, you can shoot it without a forend on, so being loose when the action is open is a non issue.

Before I do something stupid I want to make sure I understand how much movement is ok.  I bought a new Hornet on Friday ;D , and was hoping to move my 357 Max barrel to the SB2 frame.  With the forearm off the Max barrel will lock up on the SB2 but is loose, it rattles if you will.  With the forearm on it's no different open or closed than it is on the SB1 that was fitted at Ilion.

Also, there is a very small gap between the barrel and the frame when closed.  I can slip a strip of paper I cut from a junk mail envelope in the gap.  With a snap cap chambered the firing pin will puncture the paper.

Any issues or am I being overly cautious?   I REALLY like the blast to go forward, not sideways!

Morning,
These can be tough to explain over the band width...  Again to reiterate, the movement you need to be  conserned with is when the action is CLOSED.

When closed, zero movement is the goal. I sounds to me like you need to shim the barrel hinge point to get the proper tight lock up.  you can use about any metal to TRY.. But best results for the actual final shim is to use steel as found in feeler gages or hardened shim stock.

Look at the FAQ's for good complete explinations. Post up or PM with any specfic questions.

Good luck,
 CW

Cut a strip of pop can aluminum to fit into the underlug/pivot, curl it in, even use a little super-glue to hold it (a LITTLE), and put it together. That will tighten it up enough to tell you a few things. If it is still loose do another strip. When it locks up tight (and it may take a few 'firm' closings to seat it all in), you can really tell the difference from when you started. You will also have material to mic to see how much of a feeler gauge shim you will ultimately want to make.
