scoping a Savage??
« on: April 15, 2012, 02:42:01 AM »

I just bought my first Savage bolt action, though it likely will not be my last if it lives up to it's reputation. One issue I'm having though is with the mount screws. In the past I've always been able to run the screws in finger tight till right at the last at which point they'll snug up and be tight. Using a Leupold base these screws only turn a short way before they tighten up. They aren't cross threaded, all screws in all holes seem to act the same way. At first I thought there was thread locker on the screws right from Leupold but this doesn't seem to be the case either.

  Any thoughts?

When I first got it I tried to run the screws all the way in with just fingers alone and no bases in place but the would only go a few turns in. A gunsmith friend in town took a look at it and said, no big deal. He put the bases on and snugged 'em right up.
