M16-4 OFF TO BOWEN

Sent the cylinder off to Bowen to ream it to .327.
I think this will be a fun shooter.

But will it handle the pressures that are giving the other revolvers chambered for that cartridge fits?

The same frame and cylinder size, (K), in a M-19 handles the .357mag.
 
Does sound like a fun gun, William!   4" or 6'' barrel?

Hello William
You will Not regret it, I have had mine done that way for about Three Years now and they shoot very good whe Bowen get's them done. There is no concern for the Higher pressures of the Federal .327 Magnum cartridge shot in your S&W that was designed for .32 H&R Magnum, even though the SAMI Pressure's are double in Federal .327 of what they are in .32 H&R Magnum the cylinder's take it fine. The cylinder's in these Gun's are far thicker than needed to Harness the extra Presures. You will have to get busy and locate some Federal .327 Magnum rounds. Federal is the only Manufacturer of it and it run's on average of $26.00 Per Box of 50. I have been hand loading for mine since I got a hold of some once fired brass and these guns really excell in this caliber... Better locate your Muff's or Ear Plugs when it get's back it will really Bark Louder...Hammerdown

Here is a Bowen conversion that started out as a K-22.
Two cylinders, one for .32-20 and one for .327 Federal.
Fishpaw grips.
 
Bowen does Single Six conversions in .32-20 and .327 Fed. too.

And here is another Hamilton Bowen conversion to the Federal .327 Magnum. Five days after it left his shop it Baged a 51 Pound Bobcat with one of my handloads at 35 Yards, as he is shown dressed at 41 Pounds below...This Bobcat is currently one of the Largest ones ever to be Taken in the state of Tennessee as he was 41" Long, and one of the only ones recored to have been taken with a handgun... :)

Well, I dohave a Smith in .327 and it is real loud.
It was Hammerdowns account of his conversion that got me interested. I was not real happy with the 3 inch barrel and thought that it would be better with the longer barrel,
This 16-4 became available on the S&W forum and I took the chance.
He it is again.

That 16-4 barrel is as Long as Texas... Just Kiding, if you are planing to hand load for it or have some one hand load for you, I have some excellent hand load information. Here is a link to some that I have found super accurate, and the article is a good read on the Federal .327 Magnum Cartridge. The Load I killed the large Bobcat with was using a Sierra 90 Grain Sport's Master hollow point bullet and Accurate Arms #7 Powder dispenced at 11.0 Grains being a Half Grain Heavier than the article suggested as that was where my guns true accuracy really Shined giving me  aone hole Group using a CCI Small Pistol magnum primer and medium crimp. It clocked an actual speed of 1640-1660 varied F.P.S. out of my 6" Barrel Two feet in front of it using my Chrony  Bullet velocity Meter. Shown below is the Test day with Chrony in place and the recovered slugs at the 15 Yard line that I dug out of the dirt Berm when I was done. As you can see the  90 Grain Sierra Sport's Master hollow point Bullet's expanded  Very well... Hammerdown

It's a long tom that's fer sure.
I do like the balance of it--it definately is not a carry piece (would take too long to get the barrel out  ;) ).
I have happy feet and a smiley face---just waiting.

I am very happy with my 16-4 4" bbl. that Mr. Bowen converted to .327 Mag. for me.  I slipped out the cylinder and yoke assembly, sent it to him and 2 1/2 weeks later I got it back.


BTW he was on Shooting Gallery about 3 weeks ago.  Very interesting and knowledgable man.

Awesome gun.  I wish I could find a model 16 at a reasonable price.  I have wanted one ever since seeing Kurts.
