Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 7mm-08
« on: August 30, 2012, 09:13:40 AM »
I was wondering if anyone owns or at least has seen the Ruger 77 Hawkeye in 7mm-08 Rem. with a wood stock? I have seen a couple of synthetic stock ones, but never a wood stocked on, not even on sights such as gunbroker. I am missing the Old Ruger 77 MKII I had in .257 Rob., along with my old TC Encore that I had a 7mm-08 barrel on. I am wanting to eventually get another 7mm-08, so I thoguht I would opt for the Hawkeye, but just can't find one with a wood stock.

I have one.  The wood on mine is better than plain Jane.  I've read that some people say it feels too thin in the grip and forend, but it feels just right to me. For a carrying/hunting gun anyways.  Shot two types of factory ammo to get some brass and yet to try any reloads.  Shot the factory ammo into 1.5 inch 3 shot groups.  Both were 140 grain so need more testing, but it's hunting accurate out of the box.  Another thing you should know is that the bolt comes from the factory ruff as anything I've ever felt.  Once you work the bolt a thousand times or so it gets a little smoother.  This is my biggest complaint.  I have Stevens 200's that feel like glass compared to the Hawkeye.

Wouldn't know where to find one for you.  I bought mine second hand.  Guy was selling his sons 7-08 off to buy him a 7mag.  Guess couple hundred feet per second is that important to some.  Gun was listed locally for a long time with no reply.  I offered the guy 300 for it and he took it.

There are 3 or 4 listed on Gunbroker right now that are blued / wood.

I own one in the compact version in 7mm-08, and it is a nice woods rifle.  Fits me well when wearing heavy clothing.  Smooth action, and shoots between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2, depending on ammo.  Not bad for a lightweight, pencil thin barrel, and plenty accurate for the intended purpose.  There are a lot of factory stock, 1/2 inch rifles out there......(On the internet)...:)
