I mentioned I had dropped my Handi 30-06 in the river on another thread.  Someone asked to hear about it, and had questions on the colors I used.

OK, I dropped the rifle in the Chatanika River back in 2006, while rafting down the river.  We hit a sweeper, (a tree leaning out and hanging down on the river) and almost tipped the raft.  My rifle fell overboard.  River was about five feet deep at that point, but the sweeper presented a problem in trying to retrieve the gun.  We were only a short distance from the landing and the truck.  So I marked the spot with a GPS and we went on home.  Came back two days later with a big magnet, and a chain saw.  I was able to ride my ATV to the location.  Used the ATV to pull the tree back onshore, as I cut it with the chain saw.  Once the sweeper was removed I used the magnet to test for the location of the gun.  On about the fifth or sixth toss I felt it grab something.  I worked around where I was not dragging it across the bottom but lifting it clear of the bottom.  Worked it over near shore, where I could see it.  I stepped into two feet of water and picked it up.

Once home I disassembled it and started cleaning it up.  I had a cartridge in the chamber, and one of those little condom type barrel covers on it, when it fell into the river.  I found no water in the barrel at all when I opened it.  All the internal parts had rusted, so I took them to the wire wheel on my bench grinder and cleaned them up.  I cleaned the outside of the gun with brake fluid to remove the light rust on the action and barrel.  Next morning they had rusted again overnight.  I cleaned them once more, and set them up to watch.  Next morning they had rusted again.  So I cleaned them up one more time and prepped them for painting.  I used Rustolium Textured paint.  The color was Sage.  The wood I roughed up with steel wool, and used Rustolium Accents Paint.  The color was Black Granite.  This gave a feel of sand in the paint on the metal, making it easy to grip.  A really rough texture on the wood, that to me looks great.  People are constantly coming up[ and asking where I got the custom camo job.  I tell them a friend did it, and leave it at that.  If I tell them I did it myself and what I used they are in shock that I would paint a gun with Rustolium paint.

The picture is there now.  I had to switch from Mozilla to Explorer to do the copy and paste.  For some reason I can't copy and paste in mozillia.
 
After six years the paint on the metal is just fine with a few scratches, but nothing down to the metal.  The wood is a differant story.  It's taken a beating, and shows it.  but I have not felt the need to touch it up yet.  When I do it will be simple, just remove the recoil pad, take the stock off the gun, and respray it.  Or I may decide to sand it down and do something differant.
 
I also did the scope that was on the gun at the time.  But that scope bit the dust in a motorcycle crash.  I like this Nikon better anyway, it has the Ballista Plex reticle.  It's good out to five hundred yards.  I try and hold my shots to no more than five hundred yards with the 06.  Bullet performance is lacking.  Just not enough energy to take down a Wolf.  Our Wolves are the size of an average Whitetail.

Well, your handi obviously gets a lot of use, and that's what they're made for.  I kind of feel like I'm not using my handi's enough now since I haven't dropped one in the river or downed one on a motorcycle!


The paint job looks good!  Never admit to rattle-canning it, as you've noticed it seems to impress people less.

The Rusteleum Textured paint is great on barrels & receivers.  I have painted about 1/2 dozen of my handis so far.  One gun has been out in the rain for two deer seasons since I painted it and only rust issue was inside the receiver, my fault for not drying it out after sitting out in monsoon.  A can in the lower 48 states is 5 or 6 bucks and will paint 4 or 5 guns. 
 
I really like the Accent paint on your stock set.  I think next time I get the urge to paint I will redo a couple of PW stocks with Accent.

Very nice.  I'll be giving it some thought for humid TX.  Suface rust is definitely an issue.  Haven't dunked any yet but I do canoe.
 
I'm wondering if you painted the internal parts also?

Thanks for the story, I knew it wasn't something like, I dropped the gun while loading it in the canoe type story.

I painted the hammer and trigger, but nothing else on the inside.  Especially kept it away from the ejecting system.

bikerbeans:  I forgot to say I covered the Accent Paint with a clear coat finish.  The Accent Paint is not that durable itself.  Once covered it has worked good.  Still not as durable as the textured paint.

I've put that textured paint on one of my Mini-14s, and my .223 Ultra.  They are now white for use during the winter.

Quick note on Mozilla. I use it too and find the lack of "paste" annoying as I do have "copy" ??? 
BUT if you depress "Ctrl & V" at the same time it will "paste" what ever you have copied...

Rifle looks very nice!  I have a couple "ratty" handi's and have contimplated this!  As for the texture paint, Thats something I have been doing since the stuff came out!!

At the store we used to get allot of Rem 870 police shotguns. They sold GREAT after I cleaned them up and painted the beat up wood stocks with Duplicolor "truck bed coat" paint. Rustolium texture paint gave nicer look but was not as durable.

I have really been liking the sage green and taupe tan colors on firearms lately...

I have used the same paints on several firearms in the past. I coat the entire gun, metal and all, with a matte polyurethane when the paint is cured...no shine on a hunting gun, and it helps the finish resist scratches longer.
It is definitely necessary to let the paint cure first or everything will be soft for quite a while. I like to put them in my truck on the dash (black interior) when the sun is shining for a couple days, a free curing oven!
