Need some data, 45/70 neck sized dia.
« on: January 31, 2004, 03:02:40 PM »
Can some of you with 45/70 dies tell me what the inside & outside neck measurement is after you size? My first Danish 11.7 loads I neck sized my cut down 45/70 brass with my .45LC dies.  It worked OK but it sized them way small even for the store bought cast bullets. The Dane is supposed to like .459 projectiles. My lee 405 hb throws them a bit fat at the base. +.462. I will need to size them down. My assorted brass measues neck thicness of .010 to .011. I figure .459 plus .021 = .480. If I reduce it say .004 and I should have enough neck tension to need the press to seat the bullet. OD=.476 should do it. I have a old straight walled die (.467)  that I may be able to open up to .476 and use it to size 1/2 in. of neck and then but a slight bell in the brass and stuff the bullet. I read about BP loading without sizing and just seating the bullet with finger pressure. The Dane has a generous chamber. My oversized bullets fall to the base and I have not yet sized them. My Gut tells me that buying 45/70 dies may be a waste of money. Data and comments requested. Thanks in advance. JB

Not necessariily so, the nice thing about 45-70 FL dies is by backing them out of the press you can size the case nects down to where they only put .002/.003" tension on the bullet.  The measurement should be down inside where the base of the bullet will be seated.  The case mouths will be smaller because of the taper but not much.  At any rate you will be working the brass a lot less than the .45LC sizer is.  Many reloaders of 45-70s use this method of "partial sizing".  It works well.

I measured 4 45/70 sizer dies.
RCBS 1981  .468 dia   straight taper from head of case to start of neck diameter with a slight step at start of neck.
RCBS 1973  .467 dia   step at base of neck is large about .010. The   sized case looks like a slight bottle necked cased  with a .500 long neck.
Lee              .468 dia   straight taper from head of case to start of neck.
Redding        .465 dia   straight taper from head of case to a transition angle at start of neck. The transition angle looks about .050 long. The sized case appears to be a slight bottle neck with a neck .375 long.

Thank you for your data and suggestions.  I think after seeing the actual measurements I can not use 45/70 die as the Dane chamber is very generous.  the dia. of a formed/fired case is larger at mid length than the base/web.  I do not wish to work the body at all and so I think I will need to work up a die that will only engage the mouth unless I acquire a 45/70 die and cut away the entire lower 1/2 of the die.  That may work. Looks like I have another adventure here.  JB

JBMAUSER,
I forgot to mention all the numbers are the inside diameters of the neck portion of the sizing dies.  The case head end of these dies all measured .500 to .502.

JBMauser-
You might want to try the LEE Carbide Factory Crimp die for the 45 Colt to neck size with. It has a carbide sizing ring and is suitable for .460" bullets and up. Check the I.D. with a caliper before buying it. Allow .020" for case walls. They range in I.D. size from .479" to .482" usually.
