Need 41 Mag load advice
« on: March 18, 2012, 02:32:42 PM »
 :) Good day Gents,

You all were so helpful on my last revolver purchase. I chose a S&W N-frame model 58 41 mag 4" bbl.  It is away getting Metaloyed (Hard chromed) and a trigger job (pictures when its done).  What I would like is some recommendations on good self-defense loads.  I have Sierra 210gr JHPs and I have Unique/2400/blue dot/800x powders?  Looking for a load at around 1000 - 1150 fps (41mag load that is self-defense ready but wont beat the crap out of my gun with lots of practice.   :D

So what do you all think?   ???   Or should I have two loads one practice / one defense?  I like practicing and having the same aiming point that I will carry with.   Thanks again Old Moss   :P
Best regards, be safe, and keep your powder dry!
Thanks Old Moss

I've got a 657 Mtn Gun and a 57 (both 4 inchers) and I get the velocity you're looking for with 10 gr of Unique. It's been my standard load for over 20 years, and it doesn't hurt to shoot, isn't real dirty, and takes javelina (20-70 yards) with 1 shot. I've shot it in a half dozen or so .41's, and has shot well in all of them.

Yep that will do it.

If you want to try other powders I have also had good luck with Power Pistol and 4227 for every day working loads like you are looking for.

my .41 Mag is a single action, and serves as a back up gun on hunting trips.  With self defense loads be sure you are not going to through your target and hit someone or something behind the target.  (Hard cast 210 grainers pushed by a healthy dose of 2400 will shoot through a whitetail so I see no reason why they would not do the same thing on a person)

keep em talkin' while I reload
