Cast in Mini 14 or Ranch Rifle
« on: January 31, 2012, 07:55:38 AM »
Anyone doing this? I am about to and I'm looking for some opinions. I'm going to keep the velocity around 1,000 fps and use Johnson's Paste Wax for a lube. I'm actually going to go checkless over 9 grains of Unique. Feedback?

That is going to generate a whole lot more than 1000 fps! Like about double and maybe a little more.

Flash,

I've still got a coffee can full of cast with gas checks that we used in a mini.  The only problem we had was build up where the bullet entered the chamber, and after a while we'd get stove pipes.  We were using Lyman lube, haven't tried the Johnson's.

You might even want to try some Alox.

I'm interested in how this works for you.

BTW, we ran some pretty fast loads through with no issues other than the one mentioned.

I agree with you. I've done some reading and found 4.5 to 5 grains to be what I'm looking for

I have tried it. Used no gas check and lubed with Johnson's Paste wax. It won't cycle the bolt but they group nicely at 25 yards with open sights........all I'm looking for

Maybe you could find a lighter recoil spring.

30 years ago, 18.5 gr of rx-7, 18.5 gr mp5744, and 22.5 gr of h/imr 4895 functioned well for thousands of rounds from my ruger mini-14 with a 50 gr gc bullet.

back then , i used lyman's alox lube, but today i'd use liquid alox, sizing and seating bullets using lee's push-thru sizer dies.
