Arisaka Cock on Open I think I've found it!!!!

  I love my Arisaka type 38. I had it rebarreled in 260 Rem. and in my opinion the gun has only one flaw. It is a little hard to close the bolt.
  I was on another site and one of the members posted that Brownells has a page on doing just this.(cock on open) Once this is done, I will have the pefict gun.

I couldn't agree more on the T 38.  I put mine in 6.5 x 55 and got very respectable velocity with amazing accuracy.  I kind of like cock-on-close, although I haven't turned any of my normal rifles around.  I've seen 38s listed with the cock-on-open fix so I am sure it works.

If this works out the way I think it should, I may consider a Type 99 in 25-06 or maybe 300 something. I have never seen a gun that can shoot like this one. My brother bought it as a boched student gunsmith project. It had been re chambered to 6.5X257 Roberts. After mounting a scope on it, my brother took it it the range and it hit 5 inches at 50 yards. He only paid $50 for it so he gave it to me. I sent it to E.R.Shaw to have it rebarreled. The rest is history. I have a Rem. 700 ADL in 270 and it can not touch this Jap. for accuracy. If I can lighten up the cocking a little, this gun will be insane! It's light, Short, capable of 400+ yard shots and it doesn't kick. At 100 yards there is no paper left for a fourth shot and at 200 yards she is under an inch. WOW!!!!

That was sure my experience, and I had the original barrel.  It was bright and sharp, chrome lined I think.  The rifle was cut as a sniper, maybe they were selected.  It had a Fajen stock, Timmney trigger, somebody had jeweled the bolt, wish I still had it.  I used to think about getting a paratrooper take-down and going 30-06 for a traveling rifle.
After the war I think P O Ackley tried to blow up all the military bring-backs and the Jap actions were the strongest.  Part of an old Studebaker in there I guess.
