Lil gun vs H110
« on: May 01, 2012, 11:32:20 AM »
I heard H110 can have ignite issues if under loaded more than 3%. Lil gun seems to have similar characteristics, does it have same issues?

No, but in revolvers, Lil' Gun has issues of it's own.

I've never had an H110 fail to ignite using CCI Magnum Primers and listed loads.  Typically, I stick right to the bottom listed loads and have had good luck with .45 Colt, .357 and .30 carbine.  ;)

I have tried Lil' Gun in a few rifles. I really had bad/dangerous results in the 22 Hornet. I know that there many that swear Lil'Gun is THE powder for the 22 Hornet. I started out using recommended beginning loads with both small rifle primers and small pistol primers and I got 400 fps swings in velocity. I got rounded primers, I got flatten primers, I got separated cases, lots of stretched cases. I was afraid to go any higher with powder charge. It makes me wonder if the ones that did well just started out with a high charge and to he** with working a load up. I have never had issues like that with H110/W296. Starting loads worked just fine, and I can work them up with out a problem. I have used it in 357 Mag, 357 Max, 44 Mag both handgun and rifles, 22 hornet, 22 K hornet and many others. I pretty much gave up on Lil'Gun because of my experience with the 22 Hornet. To me the H 110 and W296 is much more predictable and gives excellent results.

I'm one of those Hornet rifle shooters that have had no issues with my Lil'Gun loads, from 35 to 50gr projectiles, 12 -13gr loads,
all small pistol primers, in various brass headstamps, in 3 different rifles.
I started at around 12grs, so I have no experience with reduced capacity loads.
I've found my loads consistent and potentially as accurate as I would wish to get.
I've also loaded with ADI's AR2205, the equivalent of H4227, and am a bit more wary of that with some pressure signs over 10grs load,
and case head separations.
Potential to overload there, as opposed to the 'fill the case' Lil'Gun, (although none of my loads have been compressed, as  I have seen some loads advertised).

I don't know about reduced loads.
The Hornet cast bullet loads that I have tested were with 700x, 4.5grs with a 45gr pill for 'big group' squib loads.

cheers,
SS

I quit using lilgun alltogether. I did have good luck with it in the hornet and beowulf. I had allready quit using it in handguns do to the fact that it errodes forcing cones but thought id burn it up in the rifles. One day i was out with my beo and had some loads worked up using both lilgun and wc297. 5 quick shots with lilgun and you could about light a cigerette off the barrel. 5 quick shots with 297 and you could still wrap your hand around the barrel. That drastic of  a difference showed me that you could easily burn the throat out in a rifle with it too. Its to bad because i allways got good velocity and accuracy out of it in both rifles and handguns but then i guess it was no better results then i could get with 820 aa9 297 or 110/296. Like was said eariler stick with 350 ccis and youll never have a problem with 110.
