NEF Sportster 22 Mag ?
« on: March 16, 2012, 02:46:10 PM »
just wondering if anyone else has a 22 mag barrel that doesn't like 40gr ammo? picked up 2 boxes 1 CCI Maxi Mag 40gr and a box of Armscore Precision and best group i could get from it was 4" at 50yards :o :o  really 4" surely they should shoot 40gr ammo better than that. i checked scope, mounts, base, and tried adjusting the tourque on the forend bolt and nothing changed. anyone else have this happen with 40gr ammo??

It must just be an individual gun thing. I picked up some Armscor 40 grain .22 Mag jacketed soft point ammo for cheap just for blasting ammo. The bullets really looked great and when I shot it it was inside of 2" at 100 yards. Not the best but plenty good for coyotes out to that range. My gun likes it....<><....:)

My Sportster with a 1 in 9 twist likes the heavier bullets best, in fact the 50 grains from Federal are the best. The 40's are OK but anything lighter are poorest.

Mine is a STD barrel and shoots the 40g OK.. but REALLY likes the 50 g slugs!! (Nearly one hole at 50yards) Thats nice for me cause I also like them! ::)  My Marlin 882 will not shoot the 50G bullets well at all..

My Handi liked the WW 40 gr JHPs best..My Savage 93 w/accu likes the same, plus the Hornady 30gr v tips.  I haven't yet tried the Hornady's in the Handi though.
I tried the CCIs in both and wished they would score better (I'm a CCI fan)..but they don't.  My Handi shoots about 1.25" at 50 yards..the Savage much tighter..3/8 to 1/2 inch with some cloverleafs.
Just as an aside, do you have an O-ring on the forestock mounting post ?

It took a couple of hundred rounds for my 22 Mag to settle down.

Which twist rate are they selling now?  I'm assuming the other twist rate is 1/16".

I think that was a reference to a CF .22, not a .22 rimfire twist.

.22 rimfire H&Rs are 1:16", the only 1:9" rimfires are the 17HMR and 17M2.

Glad to know I wasn't sleeping for a decade or so.  I knew .22 rimfires were almost always 1:16 twist and then this 1:9 shows up on a rimfire thread and I thought "when did they do that and why?"

Could be; I haven't put that many through my NEF .22 mag....so I expect it could do better.  My Savage is too new to have that many through it yet.

And, FWIW, a good friend was recently extolling the virtues of CORRECTLY fire lapping his 22 (a LR, in this case) and it did wonders for him. It is a controlled 'wearing in' process, so one should be able to get there by just shooting, right?. But, if it is holes in the right place as soon as possible, this might bear looking into.

Instead of fire lapping, I take a new rifle home ..clean the bore..then use Happich Simichrome or equivalent to scrub the bore a bit..then finish cleaning..
