How to remove Ithaca model 37 barrels
« on: March 10, 2004, 08:26:50 AM »
I just bought a used Ithaca feather lite 16 gauge.  I would like to remove the barrel.  The magazine nut pin is what I'm not familiar with.  Do you push or pull the nut pin as far out as possible, then turn the magazine nut clockwise or ???????  I know this is an elementry question, but help would be apprciated.  The darn thing could just be on extra tight.  I soaked the magazine nut with penetrating oil last night in hopes of getting it loose soon.  I don't want to force the nut and have not taken nor do I want to use any type of tool to it.  There is no rust that I can see to keep the magazine nut from turning.   Thanks   Jay

It has been awhile, but first make sure it is empty.  Pull all the way back on the pump handle, then unsrew the cap.  The pump handle has to be all the way back to remove the barrel.  I cannot remember which way to turn it.  I hope this helps.

It should be relativly simple, unless someone has really cranked the cap nut up tight with a pipe-wrench.  Remember that you are actually running the nut out to lock the barrel in place, so you need to tighten the nut, ie; turn it righthand(screwing it down the threads, towards the magazine tube) to be able to turn the barrel, to remove it.

Once you screw the nut in, even just part way, you'll hear the clicks, you should be able to twist the barrel to the left, (left to loosen), and pull it out. Then if you want to clean and lube the magazine tube, unscrew the cap right off the tube. Watch out for the spring and magazine limiting plug, as they will spring right out once you loosen the cap off.

There should be a little screw type thing near the cap. You can push a little bit and it pops out, and u use that to screw off as far as it goes and then turn it to the left. Thats how it is on my 20 guage 37 .
