The last time I checked, it was illegal to detain someone without color of law.  I wouldn't think that a restaurant could take it on themselves to lock you up.

I also think that the food in that restaurant must be very, very good, or their customers very, very stupid for them to still be in business.

A tip should be a reward for good service and not an added TAX that the waitresses don't get anyway. At Turkey Run in Ind the rest at the inn chgd us an 18% gratuity over and above their inflated prices because we as a family were more than 5. What ticked me off the most was that there were plently of waitresses so there was certainly no burden. I hate being ripped off like that. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

I was told TIP stood for:
To Insure Promptness.
It was a reward for service.
When I was a waiter I knew this an usually busted my but to treat the customers they way I would want to be treated.
When I worked at a gas dock many people tiped me.  I have handed back some tips because I did not earn them.
At a few restaraunts I have pulled out a pen and written down 25% and crossed it out and written 20% then on down every 5 minutes it has taken a waiter to co0me back to use.
My father has walked up to a manager and handed him 95% of the bill and explained the service was so bad the watier owed him.
In Europe tips are often included in your bill.  And many restaraunts put on their menue that an 18% gratuity is auto for groups larger than 6 or 8.

A group of us once ate at Applebee's in Santa Fe. There were nine of us. They added an 18% gratuity because we were over six in the group. The catch was that we were split up and seated at different tables in different sections of the resturant and had seperate waitresses. If we had all been at the same table it would have been OK. We weren't and I don't return to places that rip me off.

If I were locked over a tip dispute I would dial 911 and let a cop sort it out. Basically that's kidnapping. A person could probably swap not filing charges for the tip.  ;D

What on earth difference does it make how many people are in a group?  If I ever see a required tip on the menu, I leave.  If the wait staff wants a tip, let them earn it.

The service there was lousy. Those of us who got the breakfast buffet were pretty well done eating before others got their order, a couple of them were simply cereal, and then they took most of it off the buffet. We waited for a tuna sandwich 45 min then left another time. Lousy service + 18 %?? Aint happening again. A tip is a GRATUITY, a way of saying I'm grateful for the good service. POWDERMAN.  :o :o
