My attention was riveted by this header.

Vegetable oil is an alternative fuel for diesel engines and for heating oil burners. For engines designed to burn diesel fuel, the viscosity of vegetable oil must be lowered to allow for proper atomization of the fuel, otherwise incomplete combustion and carbon build up will ultimately damage the engine.

They Burn Used Oil in Pickup trucks.
"Used oil works just fine to power my modifyed 1998 Chevy 3500 Crew Cab with 6.5L turbo Diesel engine with 220K miles on odometer" says Carl Weaver of Lisbon, Ohio.
His friend John Bennetch of Carlisle, Penn, drove his converted pickup truck from Pennsylvania to Missouri and back using 'only' used motor oil, "He said the trip he averaged 14mpg."
The truck starts on regular diesel till the temprature reaches 140 degrees, a relay sensor switches it over to oil, During Cold winter months he runs 10% diesel in the oil to get it to run right, during warm summer months the truck runs fine on oil.

ive not heard that but would not be surprised. i guess then that home made bio diesel would also be fine worthy? i do know there is a fine for running non taxed farm diesel on hiway. god forbid one should be self suffcient in this country?

It works well in warm climates, in cold it can be a real pain to keep it from solidifying.  My recommendation for a good fuel if you have to deal with cold most of the year would be Alcohol.  Requires only a few special hoses and a jet adjustment typically to get a vehicle switched to alcohol and if you use the right rubber, you can switch back to gasoline fairly painlessly.  If you live in a cold climate, you can use the heat source you already use to heat to help accelerate the rate of production and distillation process.    Plus if you do it right, you can use anything biological, even wood pulp, to make alcohol.

I worked on a project in Malaysia to use a combination of waste oil and palm oil to make a B70 bio - diesel for tobacco farmers to use in flue curing Virginia tobacco and know several people who are successfully running 12 valve Cummins turbo diesel engines on either straight veggie (waste)  oil or a veggie / petrol diesel mix. As per the above posters comments, operating temperature and viscosity is one issue and a real commitment to the mixing and preparation process is another. While not complex chemistry, the process needs to be followed strictly to get bio diesel that will work with injectors.

As to the alleged fines, the only possible source of fines would be use of untaxed OHV petro diesel ina bio diesel mix. Theoretically it might be possible for a bio diesel mix using waste petroleum oils to exceed Cal emissions levels for diesel but veggie diesel burns so much cleaner and with so much less sulfur than petrol diesel that in practice virtually anything at B30 or higher will sail past emissions requirements. So, fines for veggie diesel have no basis. There's no excise evasion and I can't see emissions being an issue.
