T/C Impact
« on: April 18, 2012, 02:45:00 PM »
I want an inexpensive muzzleloader for this coming deer season.  I'm considering the T/C Impact.  How do they shoot?  Any issues?  I'll probably be shooting BH209.

I know a handful of guys with them, They say they are great guns for the money. My one friend shoots 90 grains of BH209 with a Hornady XTP. The gun shoots well too, at 100 yards he is shooting right under 2 inch groups. Hope this helps Swampy.

I bought one for my boy for Christmas.  It shoots as well as my Disc Elite and better than my Encore.  For me it handles well.  At first I didn't think I'd like the hammer, it is a rounded "nub", but it actually works well with a scope mounted.  We've had no issues with his and the only issue I think someone may have is it might be a little short for some people's taste, even with the spacer in the stock.  I highly recommend it and if I was in the market for another muzzleloader it would be an Impact.

Anyone having issues with it unlatching at the shot?  The owner of the gunshop I used to work at said he was having issues with one last season while testing.  120 grain charge of 777 and a 250 Shockwave.

You can never go wrong with a Thompson Center firearm.

Its a super nice inexpensive (not cheap) modern inline muzzleloader.

I am considering one for my growing daughter, since they come with a stock spacer for adjustment.

I played with one locally and it felt really nice.

I was going to buy one but when I checked it out at a gun shop that funky hood behind the breech plug spooked me and looked like a real pain in the butt to clean.

I went to cabelas last fall intending to buy an Impact, ended up walking out with the Omega Dream Season, the Impact just doesn't have the fit and finish expected of T/C. I have an Encore .50 cal muzzleloader and an Icon 30/06 and the impact feels like a boat paddle compared to those.

Swampman,

I bought one after deer season this winter but have just recently got to working up a load for it.  I've waited to reply because I was trying to get to the bottom of a problem I was having.  Turns out the problem was with the shooter not the gun.  See my other post on this page for details.  Having resolved the issue, I would highly recomend it.  I'm new to MLs but have shot many high powers and shotguns over the years and I know a nice, excellent shooting, gun when I get my hands on it.  I don't think you could beat it for the price. Ya it's not top of the line and it's got some plastic parts on it but IMHO its is one nice little gun. The little hood did seem a little odd at first but it seems to work quite well and there is very little blow back to clean up.  If you decide to get one I'd be glad to share some load work-up info with you that might save you some time.

Swampman, a friend of mine has one and likes it a lot. It's very accurate.

 Swampman
This is a summary of my load work-up on the Impact.

-        All powder charges are by weight (not Volume)
-        Powder was BH 209
-        Primers were Fed. 209A
-        All velocities were through a fouled Barrel (clean barrel about 40 to 60 fps faster)
-        Velocities are average over at least 3 shots, usually more
-        Muz velocities were at 10 feet and the max spread was about 20 fps

Bullet:  44 cal 240 gr XTP/HP
Sabot:  MMP Green
Powder Charge: 70gr
Muz Vel.: 1870 fps
100 Yd Vel.: 1560 fps
100 Yd. group:  3.5”

Bullet:  44 cal 240 gr XTP
Sabot:  MMP Green
Powder Charge:  75 gr
Muz Vel.:  1965
100 Yd Vel.:  Groups so bad I didn’t even shot a group over the chrony at 100yd
100 Yd. group: 3.5”

Bullet:  250 gr 45 cal XTP/HP
Sabot:  Harvestor Crushed Rib
Powder Charge:  75 gr
Muz Vel.:  1960 fps
100 Yd Vel.: 1555 fps
100 Yd. group:  1.25”

Bullet:  250gr Spitefire TEZ
Sabot:  Original blue that came with bullet
Powder Charge:  75 gr
Muz Vel.:  1950 fps
100 Yd Vel.: 1637 fps
100 Yd. group:  2.2”

Bullet:  250gr Spitefire TEZ
Sabot:  Harvestor Crushed Rib
Powder Charge: 75 gr
Muz Vel.: 1970 fps
100 Yd Vel.: 1645 fps
100 Yd. group: 1.4”

As you can see the gun doesn’t like 44s in MMPs at all and it really likes crushed rib sabots.
A note about group size:  I’m not your best bench shooter.  If I even approach 1” it was a very good day and the gun is almost certainly sub MOA.

Hope this helps.

Were any of these easy to load?

None were really hard to load.  In order, the 44s with the MMPs were the hardest (but not terrible), next were the TEZs with original sabots, next were the 45 XTPs with crushed ribs (quite nice), and the easiest were the TEZs with the crushed ribs (very easy..almost loose but shot well).

The Impact is a very accurate gun. The "only" complaint I have is the hood is the only lock up for the gun, not a big deal, but I would have liked a stronger set up. It must be strong enough though.

will be setting up an impact (pyro pellets/209) in a couple weeks ; anymore ideas for bullet/sabot/powder combos -- also think spin jag makes difference in accuracy ? To let swampman know that gun will be tested in Green Swamp and others nearby this season.

In my Impact I am using 240 gr XTP HP's with the green sabot and (2) 50 gr 777 pellets.  I don't know what the velocity is but there is very little fouling and I get 2" bench groups.  The load will kill deer very well.  I would buy another Impact without question...I like the hood feature too.
