Reduced slug loads.
« on: January 16, 2004, 10:13:14 AM »
I had an idea that I want to get some feedback on.  In the course of loading for the new barrel Im getting for the 870 it occured I should try to do some reduced velocity target/plinker loads (similar, I guess, to the new "tactical" slug loads I guess.)  So what I thought of is this.  I know what wads will take the Lee and Lyman slugs.  I simply look for this wad in the 1oz lead shot data sections and find evrything from slow (1000fps) to fast field (1300fps.)  Does this seem like a sound idea?  I figure as long as the shot load does not need doctoring with filler wads, then the load should work with a slug instead of pellets.  Is this a sound Idea or not?
Thanks for the feedback.

I would back off the listed load some. the slug will not compress as much as the shot does and will raise the pressure.

A few of the data books I have list 2 or 3 speed/charge weights to tailor type of shooting.  I figure just picking the lowest charge weight should keep me safe.  I think I might just give it a try.  The barrel went on order yesterday and should be here by the end of the week!

two of my favorite reduced loads are:  Lee 1 oz slug, WAA12 wad, 25 grs. unique, rem premier or STS hull and a W209 primer.   OR   Lyman sabot slug, WAA12F114 wad, 23 grs. Unique, Rem STS hull and W209. Both these loads do about 1200 fps. out of my mossberg 500 with very tolerable recoil. I also cast the Lyman slugs out of wheel weights(hard) to use in my cylinder bore or rifled choke(would'nt want to put the hard ones through any kind of choke). They are a lot of fun to shoot!   Tad :D
