Tell me..
« on: July 26, 2012, 06:09:02 AM »
I have been debating on getting a Glock 27, standard mags for CCW and extended mags with a grip extension for hiking.

My PRIMARY reason for getting it would be to carry while hiking/camping. I have a CCW permit but virtually never carry.

With that being said, I have now been pondering getting one of the 10MM's for hiking/camping/HD instead.

More power, more range seem to make sense, especially here in northwestern montana..

Other than ammo availability/cost, tell me why I SHOULDNT go the 10mm route!

The only reasons not to get a 10mm Auto are exactly what you mentioned - availability and cost.  I was buying some ammo the other day and there was a guy that was looking at both a Glock 20 and the ammo.  When he asked the salesperson to show him the 10mm Auto ammo in the glass cabinet because he couldn't find it, the salesman could only point him towards two loads.

For a reloader, the 10mm is a great cartridge.  I used to have one but traded it off because I hated losing brass at the range or in the field.  I'm still thinking about getting one again along with 1000 cartridge cases.

The ONLY reason which comes to mind, for the reason NOT to get a 10mm, is your possibilty of BIG bear encounters there in NW Montana.  :( That having been said, I cannot fault your logic of the G20.  I too, while living /hunting/hiking in Colorado, chose the G20 for outddoor use and the G27 for urban protection.
Yes, the 10mm ammunition is getting pricey, however, so are ALL of the factory magnum pistol choices.   If  your pistol budjet only allows one, I would suggest the G20 with later add ons of conversion barrels in 40S&W and/or 357 Sig.  Thus allowing cheaper factory ammo use or reloading lead bullets to get more trigger time and to do double duty as a HD weapon.
Additionally, be sure to check out the G20SF (slim frame).  It wasn't available when I got my G20 twenty years ago, and for me it's slightly smaller grip circumferance makes a big differance.

Im gonna go take a look at one today and while Im there, check on ammo availability. I actually want to get into reloading, and this may be the perfect excuse to pick up one of those Lee handloaders!

Checked out the 20 and 29 today, really like the feel of the 29.

I asked and the guy at the store claimed the 20 was a Gen4 but it had no Gen4 markings, same with the 29.

They stock 3 brands of 10mm and the price really wasnt much more than 40sw of the same stuff.. but they were weak loads.

Have the Gen4's  (20/29's ) even been released yet? I found 1 review of one online but no mention of them being available anywhere else.

As far as I know there are no gen 4 20/29 made.  I have a 20 and my cousin has a 20sf, once you handle both the sf and the regular 20 yes the sf feels nice but I found I accually shot better with the larger grip. As to the larger bears you can load heavy hard cast bullets and can buy Double tap or Buffalo Bore ammo. The down side to running heavy hard cast bullets preferably the Buffalo Bore is that they don't shoot for crap in the stock barrel due to the polyagonal rifling. We both ended up buying Lone Wolf barrels ($110) (they have cut rifling and full chamber support) the other delema we ran into is the recoil spring (15lbs) is to weak to run full power 10mm loads and we both upped to 22lbs springs ($35 spring +guide rod) When we switch over to the heavier recoil spring we found we got a 50-60fps gain in all out loads accrossed the board. Also gained reliability with the heavy loads the standar spring was bouncing off the back of the frame and disrupting the cycle. I feed my 20 a constant diet of loads that generate roughly 750ftlbs. Longstory short a few minor things to a 20 and hard cast loads I think it would be just fine for dealing with big bears (sorry it took so long to get to that just had to explain). The LW barrel I got was threaded and I did end up buying the LW comp as well and the hotter the load the better the comp works with the hot loads and the comp recoil is comparable to more then a 9mm but not as much as a 40.

I carry a Glock 27 with Trueglo TFO sights "everyday". Shoots good, carrys well, points well, and with the 180 grainers FN, I feel well armed.

When I got my 20 I was in the same boat couldn't find a sf anywhere so I ended up getting the normal 20 and the normal 20's are accually cheaper by about $50. My cousin with the SF has much bigger hands then I do and side by side and handling them both there really isn' much difference between the two.

Like so many others, in my hands the 20sf, doesn't feel significantly different. If I handled them without knowing which was which, it's unlikely I couldn't tell the difference. A gen 3 standard frame would be my choice in the Glock 20/21. I'd not be paying a dime extra for a gen 4. Doesn't seem like it was an improvement. More like a change just for the sake of change. Kinda liking the size of the 29---------:).

I use 22 mags in my 27 for reloads, not much more difficult to carry than ten rounders, something about having fourteen shots as a backup makes me feel better.

Im HOPING the wife likes it and can handle the "snap" I keep hearing about so I can get her one. If not, I'll get her a G26

another option is a glock 21 or 30 and get a storm lake or kkm barrel in 10mm then you have a 45acp in wich ammo is readly advailable and the 10 mm for woods carry   a 10 mm barrel is on my CHRISTmas list for my g30
