Winchester model 71 348 to 348 AI???
« on: May 24, 2012, 04:27:11 AM »
I have a Winchester model 71 in 348 Win and was wondering how everyone fells about having it re-chambered to 348 AI?  It’s a deluxe model that needs a new stock and while it’s out I was toying with the idea of re-cambering to the Ackley improved version.  Any thoughts?

I have a Model 71 that I inherited from my great uncle.  They are great rifles as is.  If you want to monkey with something, chose a gun that is not collectable.

My reasoning was all the print say it was a poorly designed cartridge, too much bolt thrust.  If the consensus is don’t alter that's fine too.

You can buy a new one from Winchester, and Hornady is going to make their pointed bullets in 348 too.  I'm guessing they will also load 348 ammo too.

It depends on the condition of the gun. While 71 winchesters are collectable one with poor finish and after restocking loses a lot of value so rechambering to AI might not hurt the value as much as doing it to a pristine example of a 71...  ;) Also if you ever try to sell it you'll narrow the buyers market by rechambering.

I would probably leave it alone if it was me..
