New Axis

My wife just picked up a youth model axis 243 nib yesterday evening with 100gr federal blue box.What kind of accuracy can i expect from this set up btw it came with factory scope.Its for our 8yr old son.I realize the 100gr might still be too much recoil so I'll pick some 80gr asap.Thank You for any feedback

I also purchased one last week. Mine is a .223.  Shot it Sat.  Tryed 3 differnt factory loads. Had a couple of 3 shot groups clover leaf. The bushnell scope on mine will be replaced someday, but is passable. For $342 i am more than happy so far.

  I bought a new Axis in 243 last fall, I also bought a couple of boxes of Rem. green box ammo because it they were on sale and had a rebate.
  I sighted mine in with a low cost Simmons scope and it shot 1 to 1 1/8" @ 100 yards with the Rem. factory ammo.
  I took two antelope with it and feel its a decent rifle. I am going to start handloading for it to see what improvment in accuracy I can get from handloads.
  I beleive your son will like it but the recoil is pretty sharp for a 8 yr. old and the 80 gr. loads you spoke of wount be noticeably less recoil.
  Not sure if they make any reduced recoil ammo in 243 ?  but to think of a 8 yr. old firing that from a bench with full power 243 ammo might teach him to flinch and fear the rifle going off.   Good Luck !              Jedman

I bought a axis 223 for 200.00 after stripping tge paint off everything an taking it apart an a good clean job .Had one screw , screw up got it replace this gun today with a great scope on it shot 10 rounds in 1-1/4 group

mine loves the 100 grain hor btsp and 95 grain nos bt. i reload them both with h4350. 3/4 groups at 100 with both. never put a factory round through it.

Are they now making the axis in a .223 youth model ? My wife wants one with the shorter stock.

I'm late to reply, but just noticed the post.  Anyway, by now I suppose you have discovered the trigger pull on the Axis is well on the heavy side (5-7 lbs).  You should be able to find posts on the internet on how to safely reduce the trigger pull down to around 3 lbs, which should be OK for an eight year old.

I've got an axis 223 youth and it's a great shooter, very accurate. The trigger is the only problem as it is very heavy from the factory. I replaced the trigger spring in mine with one from my local hardware store and it reduced it to about 3 lbs. Now it is much nicer to shoot.

I have yet to meet an Axis that wont shoot factory loads good.  I have dealt with three of them in 223, 25-06, and 308.  All required a barrel break in period and making the trigger lighter for the factory ammo groups to come together.  But they shoot MOA with factory ammo.  Once you reload for them, they really start to shine in the accuarcy dept.  Like, so accurate, it's hard to believe that you are shooting an entry level rifle.
