7.62x39 encore barrels
« on: May 27, 2007, 03:03:04 PM »
Does anyone here have a 7.62x39 barrel for their encore? I'm interested in getting one but want to know if it will shoot steel cased ammo.

You might ask T/C about this. Originally, 7.62X39 ammo used .311/.312 diameter bullets.  My understanding is that T/C 7.62X39 barrels are .308 inches in diameter.  I suspect military steel cased ammo has the larger diameter bullets.  The pressure generated would probably be a bit greater in a .308 caliber barrel but maybe not enough to hurt anything.  Accuracy might also suffer.

The other issue is that some of the steel cased ammo is mildly corrosive.  If you decide to use it clean your barrel well after use.

Actually the only issue of concern to me would be igniting the recessed primers on steel cased ammo. I would want to buy one and end up in the same boat the handi rifle people found themselves in. In my experience sending a .002 over sized bullet through the bore poses no issues

I have a 7.62  x  39 in an 18" Encore. It came from the custom shop. Great for deer to a max of 125 yards. It is absolutely  a tack driver.
The bore is .308 & I use a 125 grain Sierra pill. Extremely accurate w/no recoil.
Hope this helps.

Soup have you tried shooting steel cased ammo in yours? The 7.62x39 handi rifles won't fire milspec primers. I want a pistol barrel chambered in a rifle caliber that's cheap to shoot. 7.62x39 would be great but not if it won't shoot the cheap stuff.

The T/C factory bore & custom shop bore is .308-most all of the surplus ammo is .311. I don't shoot it . If you reload the 7.62x39x.308 is a fantastic round. Mine gets boring putting them all in a jagged hole & as I stated -out to 125 yards MAYBE more it's show time for deer, for coyottes I would go past 200 !

Hope this helps.

I have a 24" 7.62X39 Encore barrel. I have shot Wolf steel cased ammo in it, had some FTFs until I put a stronger hammer spring in it. I didn't like shooting bullets that were both oversize and steel with a copper wash. I solved that problem, pulling the 311s and loading 308 Sierra 125s. I got a Lee factory crimp die and shoot to my hearts content. It will be more accurate, handloaded in a brass case with the 308 diameter bullet of your choice. As previously stated it is almost boring to shoot.
