175gr TSX Barnes in a Handi 7-08?
« on: May 27, 2012, 11:13:25 AM »
My daughters boyfriend bought a box of Barnes 7mm 175 gr TSX for her to use for bear hunting in her Handi. Have any of you tried this LOOOOOONG bullet in a Handi 7mm08? Just was not sure it would stabilize and he spent a bunch on the bullets so dont want to waste them if several of you have already tried and they tumble... Thank you for the feedback. thejanitor

That bullet is 1.501" long, requires 3500fps to be stabile(1.3 Miller value) in a 1:10" twist, not gonna happen in a 7mm-08. Barnes recommends a 1:9" or faster twist for it.

Stability
The Miller stability value. It should be between 1.3 and 2.0 to ensure stabilty (the military uses 1.5).

If you can't trade them, I'd cut off the last band or so

The guy who bought them has another buddy with a .280 Rem. of a different brand, (possible different twist rate) so he may try them in that, but he can do as he wishes, I feel bad they cost him so much but we could have looked into it before the purchase.... He is a heck of a nice guy so I won't lecture him, We both learned from it.   thejanitor

I think they were made for the 7mm mag cartridge.

The original 7x57 military load was a 173gr bullet at about 2300fps.  But they used a fast 8.7" twist.
