Do you thin your pole beans?
« on: June 03, 2012, 11:46:51 AM »
When I planted my pole beans I dropped about 4 seeds per hill now that they are coming up should I thin them back or leave them as is?
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

I plant mine in a row about 4'' apart and then use a fenceloke trellis, so our situation is a little different. I don't thin mine. I wouldn't think 4 plants going up one support would be too much.

In good soil, with enough water, and enough support structure, I would let em go.

I've only done pole beans once, but do bush beans yearly.  I have never seen the need to thin them out.  I used the white nylon trellis netting with the pole beans and it worked great.  They grew up about 5 ft went over the top and came down about 3 ft on the other side.  I pinned the netting to the ground on one end and attached it to a 12 gauge wire running from one clothes line post to another at the top.

Thank you all. The plants dont at all look crowded. One more question will they climb the poles or will I have to tie the plants to the poles as they grow?

Beans are really good at adapting to varying plant populations, so they rarely need thinned unless there's and obvious problem.  As far as climbing goes, they may need a little help finding the trellis, but once they do, they should take care of the rest on their own.
