357 mag rifle deer loads
« on: April 12, 2012, 09:20:12 AM »
well i have my handi 357 max talo and have just got a 22" inch model. That said what would be a better bullet weight for deer with the mag 158 or 180? Also how hot can you safely go with the mag when no seating the bullet so deep and leaving case room. probobly will stick with w296 as that is what I am using for the Max. The handi rifle are know for running on the long side in length as many have said they have shoot dan wesson out of it in some posts. Just looking for an option as max brass is hard to find.

I use a regular 158 JSP in the max.  Load it to the max with 296 or H110.  does great.  I don't like heavier bullets in this cal.  I also shoot the 140 gr JHP in my 357 MAG rifle.  Again, loaded to max with H110 is a deadly deer killer.  Thesae weight bullets seem to be a great balance of speed and bullet weight.  Wallacem in Ga

I have heard good reports of the effectiveness of the .357 mag using factory Remington Soft-Point Corelokts, 158 grain, at reasonable ranges.  I believe I would start with this, rather than going straight to a 180 grain bullet.  As noted, the heavier bullet does not leave much powder capacity, and the 158 grain bullet should have plenty of mass.
If you dont' get the bullet performance you want from the Corelokt, I believe I would try a hard cast 158 grain bullet, before goint to a 180.
Best, Manny

I suggest a SOFT POINT over any hollow point when using in a rifle. The HPs have merit from the shorter rev barrels but once you get into a rifle the gel jump Warner's a better bullet.

Also I feel the mag case dosen't have the capacity to move the 180g for use on big game. Stick with the 158/160g.

I have shot a couple with the excellent Hornady 158 FP XTP bullet. Speeds old 160 HJ was also a good one if you can find any...

I use a Lee 158gr SWCGC bullet that weighs 164 in my alloy including the GC and lube, and push it with a good but safe dose of 2400.  Haven't shot anything with it yet that it didn't work well on, but this is out of a Rossi 92, as I haven't found a .357 mag barrel for my H&R yet.

I have killed deer with the Hornady 180 XTP in  a 10" contender using 13.5 grs H-110 out  to 107 yards and it does a great job. It opens up but holds together and goes deeeeeep.

I loaded some 158gr Hornady XTP bullets over a max load of H110. He's never recovered a bullet and they go down just as fast as his .308.

I took a antelope a few years back with a handi in 357 mag.  I used the Barnes  140 gr. XPB and it put that animal down as fast as any bullet I have ever seen.
My load was 17.7 grs of Lil Gun -  Barnes XPB crimped, this was also the most accurate load in my rifle .

Congrats on your 357 purchase.  I have taken a buck and a doe in Indiana, using my Marlin lever 357 mag.  Used 158 gr semi jacketed SP on both.  Results were as good as any of my other rifles.  I reload using Lil Gun, at 17.8 grains.  Your Talo has a 2 inch longer barrel so you should have great results.  Both deer were over 150 field dressed, doe was shot at 25 yards and the buck at 50.
