ball seating depth in an 1858
« on: June 14, 2012, 10:10:36 AM »
up untell yesterday when seating balls in my pietta 1858 i would just pull the ramming rod down as far as it would go. however last night i noticed i was starting to chew into the little arm between the rammer and the rod where it hits the frame. now some damage here is unavoidable since its two different hardness of metal hiting each other but i worry that constant hitting the arm against the frame with the force of pushing the ball in might chew a little deap.

do you guys seat yer balls all the way in or do you stop before reaching the guns limit? (for the 1858 new army)

In my ROA with std. loads, it doesn't bottom out.  Don't have a Pietta though for comparison.  What charge are you using?

Load that cylinder like you're going to be shooting from the back of a charging horse!

i shoot with 30-35 grains (by volume) of pyrodex with a wonder wad and a .454 ball. from what i understand 30 grains is a pretty normal load for these pistols.
