Home solar powered charger for small rechargable batteries....
« on: November 05, 2012, 03:56:48 PM »
I'm looking for a good small solar kit for home to recharge aa, aaa, c and d cell batteries. I'd rather not go with the portable jobs I'm seeing everywhere, but a small roof mount panel and inside battery holder for charging. Something that I can leave batteries in until needed, so it needs to have a way to shut off the charging cycle when the batteries are fully charged. I don't know if there needs to be a dummy load on the charger when it's not charging anything. Something that will be dependable for years.

Are there any good kits manufactured to provide what I'm looking for?

This is about the best I've seen for the money.  Pretty much all inclusive, minus you might need an adapter of some sort depending on desired voltage.  ;)  Might be a starting point.  They do have several other items loose.

Tacklebury...

That looks like a good system but I think it may be too large for what I'm looking for.  ...but you never know. If things got out of hand sometime in the future, one might be recharging batteries on a almost daily schedule.  I'll look into it some more.  Don't want to use gas in such a situation, so the car charger is out.  I'm thinking of mounting everything, including a few chargers, on the wall somewhere but I would want to mount it on brick or something that would not catch fire if one of the chargers went south on me.

Thanks for the ideals.

Well, there are some cheaper options there also.  I wasn't sure the extent of your wattage needs though, might look at these separately for about 1/2 of that cost.  ;)

or this style which could be permanently mounted:

I'm pretty sure you could get by with a 12 volt lawn tractor battery and a solar panel meant for deer feeders. Wire an inverter to it and plug your chargeables into it.

Solar decorative lights from Home Improvement stores...one AA rechargable battery in them and they work for emergency lighting also. I bought several for a buck each last fall. Same voltage for different sizes of batteries, so they can be used for multiple applications..
