New Handi Chambering
« on: June 02, 2012, 02:07:31 AM »
Folks keep sayin' they want new chamberings for the Handi rifle so the folks at Profino Firearms, a wholly owned subsidary of Manny & Red, Inc.  ;D , have responded.  Introducing the .308 Chipshot, available in both rimmed and rimless, in an effort to satisfy Handiholics no matter what side of the street they choose to walk down. ::)

308 Chipshot Ballastics,

190 grain Jacket HPBT @ 930 FPS - makes round holes at 100 yards, no keyholes after couple a dozen rounds.

Parent case - Rimless - 35 Remington

Parent case - Rimmed - 445SM or 44 Mag (short neck version)

Brass trim length 1.42", case capacity about 30% less than a 7.62x39 on the rimless version, holds a bit more powder on the rimmed model.

Headspaced on the shoulder for both versions.  Going with the rimmed cartridge as it eliminates neck turning, the 35 Rem neck is way thick after forming.

Chambering was performed by removing about 1 1/8" off the breech end of a Rem 700 30-06 takeoff barrel.  Rem barrel turned and fit into a 18 3/8" Pardner shorty cylinder bore, required a muzzle end sleeve.  Barrel is interference fit into the shotgun barrel and is kept for moving forward by the rim and shoulder of the liner barrel has was made to fit tight into the 12 ga chamber.

All work on the gun performed with hand tools and a dremel, bench grinder and 1" table mounted belt sander.  No lathe or endmill used.  Gun has a working ejector system.  I did deviate from Profino standards by using the GBO crown cutter on the muzzle and a counterbore for the rim cut, but I turned them by hand. ;D    Purpose of this little exercise was to prove to myself I could build a liner barrel handi without using "real" metal working equipment.  I may try and do a Profino "stub" barrel at some point just to see if I can.  Will post pics of gun and liner barrel later.  As of this morning, Gun has a scope so will try and see what kinda shooter it is.

Attached pic of  MT 44 Mag brass, loaded .308 Chipshot - Rimmed and a 30-06 round.

Very nice!! Love the look of the rimmed version. What did you use to neck the 44 cases down? I have a 30-06 ack barrel around somewhere you have got me thinking........
Good job  ;D

Good job  ;D

I first run the brass through a FL 35 Rem size die to get the body taper real close.  Then I finish it in a cut down 30-06 FL size die.    Also cut down a 30-06 seating die for boolit stuffing, and I am using a 30 cal expander to just barely start a flare on the mouth prior to seating a bullet.  FB bullets are a bit more of a challenge than the BTs.

I just got some 445SM brass to play with, Thanks Tim!, but it looks like I may have to anneal the this brass to make it work as it wants to split during forming.   Will let it sit a day and think about it some more. :P

IIRC, the 06 Ackley chamber is bigger at the base of the shoulder than the base of either a 44M or 35 Rem brass so might need a different case to work with.

Sounds interresting, can't wait to see the pic's.  I built a 7.62 X 39 in the same way using a 12 ga barrel. ( I did use a lathe and mill.)  I fit the 30 cal barrel to the 12 ga. chamber, but I also added a SS nut to the muzzle end. It works in my Dan Wesson so I thought it should work on a Handi, It does!! This barrel will shoot 3/4" groups every time at 100 yards. I have varied the tention on the barrel not in it does change how well it groups. I will beinterested in how well it shoots.

Hey BB, how would this work out for a .30/357 sub sonic and QUIET?

Necking down a 357 Mag or Max would be close to a rimmed version of the 300AAC or 300 Whisper. I imagine it has already been done.  How quite this or any round would be depends on lot of factors with subsonic velocity just being one of them.   I have solved the noise issue by having > 80% hearing loss, so to me even the 44 Bodeen and 45-120 seem like they are suppressed. :P

cudatruck?!?! - did you graft an 8' pickup box on to the back of 1968 Barracuda? ::) ;D

This is a little rimmed cartridge that I made a handi barrel for about 4 years ago.  It is the top 1.3" of a 303 British formed on 30-30 brass.   I built it in much the same way as BB's Chipshot  and it is very similar in size , caliber , & performance,  I call it the 303 Ohio Boy.    In the pic it has a 130 jacketed bullet,  case length is 1.3" and with a 130 gr. or larger bullet you can get the COAL at 2.00" to be a legal big game round in Wyoming.   The first year I built this between myself and a friend we took 5 big game animals between 30 - 110 yards all clean one shot kills .  Now it is mainly a fun to shoot plinker and was a fun project.       Jedman
