Anyone ever completely rebarrel a h&r. Not factory barrel

Basically I want to build a rifled 10 gauge.  I have a 10gauge rifled barrel blank and chamber reamer will not be a problem.  Unfortunately I do not have the room to to thread the barrel to the receiver.  I think my only option is to cut the extractor assembly off the bottom of my 10ga barrel and re-weld it to the new barrel.  Has anyone done this?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi AnonBob,

Do you have an SB-2 receiver?  Those can come from the factory as 10ga and should hold up as long as you follow SAAMI specs.

For some real slug fun, look up Mr. Ed Hubel over on... practically any forum on the net posting as Hubel458.  He's a hero when it comes to 12ga, 10ga, 8ga, 4bore, etc. slug and big buckshot loads.  He's used the NEF SB-2 receiver to chamber in 8GA FH (what he's dubbed "8ga FROM HELL!")

You can use the SB-2 barrel you have (depending on what it is) and bore it out, internally thread it, then externally thread your 10ga rifled blank.  What wall thicknesses would remain if you took that path?  Do you have a barrel on the receiver currently, or just a frame and a blank?

I am very familiar with Ed Hubel.  I already have a 12Gafh and 10gafh.  I want the rifled barrel for the 10gafh.  Unfortunately Cutting and threading the old 10ga barrel won't work.  Not enough meet to safely do it especially with the loads I am going to shoot.  I think my only option is to cut off the extractor studd and weld it to the barrel blank.  I am just not sure how complicated it is going to get.

I read a post where someone talked about welding a Handi underlug on to another barrel.  You might try searching the H&R CF rifle forum and the FAQs sticky thread for that forum.   I personnally have never seen anything other than a factory lug installation.  I would think that the welding would be easy once you built a jig to hold the lug and barrel in the correct alignment.  I am thinking since it only takes about .001 +/- on the pivot to throw off the engagment that your odds of welding on a lug and having the barrel lock up correctly are not good.   If you don't need an ejector (finger extraction notch instead) it might be easier just to weld a piece of stock to the new barrel and then mill a new pivot and latch shelf?  If you do this work please post pics and a description of how you did it as I and probably a few other would be very interested.

Guess I will Just have to jump in and try it.  I will probably start messing with it in the next month or so.  I will report if things work out.

when you weld on any steel material, the metal will actually shrink beyond its beginning length by up to a 1/16th of an inch, so ya may wanna consider that when you place your underlug. Fit your barrel and then chamber. Plus the heat may distort the chamber alittle if you weld afterwards, so its best to chamber once barrel is fitted and cooled. Just my 2 cents worth.

  "Some Day",   I will try something like this.  My plan is to start with a barrel blank with at least a 1.2" diameter OD mill a flat on the bottom of the chamber area until its 5/8" wide.  Then mill a step or keyway out of the middle of that flat, maybe 1 inch wide by .100 deep.  Then take a piece of 5/8" thick tough tool steel of ?? type and make a underlug with the matching key to fit closely in the milled keyway.
Then silver solder it on with hi temp 45 % silver solder I have . Then mill the pivot , latch shelf, and drill a 1/4' hole in the proper location for a round shafted ejector the type early H & R shotguns used.
Done properly I dont see this arrangment to be any weaker than the way the factory builds there barrels.
  Right now Green Mountain has blanks in 338 cal with a large enough diameter to build a barrel like I just mentioned for $ 50.00, and its been on my mind for quite a while but I have so many gun projects in the half finished state that I just cant add another one just yet.
