T/C Hawken "Cougar" question...
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:50:07 AM »
I just bought an unfired T/C Hawken 50 cal flintlock for $275. The shop must have just bought a collection of BP rifles because a bunch just showed up on the rack.

Another I was tempted by was an unfired "Cougar" with an absolutely beautiful stock. Not a mark on the gun anywhere. Is $375 a good price for one? If so, I think I'll go back and see if it's still there. I need it like I need a hole in my head but it sure is lovely.

Victor - go get it!  I remember the Cougar.  It was very well finished, had a round coin type cougar emblem inbedded in the stock.  I wish I had bought one when they first came out.  Now you have a chance to get a "new" one for a lot less than I would be willing to pay.  There's a nice gun for you to use or to put away for your grandkids.  An a bp gun will be the last guns Americans can legally have if whats-his-name gets back in.  IMO.

Thanks Mike. I just grabbed it. I was mistaken on the price; it was only $325. I'll take some pics later.

That is a nice rifle.  It would have been well worth the money at $375.  A lucky find.

You got a great deal! You don't see T/C Cougars for sale very often.

Fortunately for me, this shop is more into "black rifles" than black powder.  :)  I suppose they didn't know how to price the Hawkens or just wanted to move them quickly. They had all of the recent bunch, mostly Spanish & Italian guns, priced similarly to the two new-old-stock T/Cs I bought.

Anyone know how many of the Cougars T/C made, and when they were produced?

Also, the flintlock has a serial# of 591xx. Is there any telling how old it is by the serial#?

T/C had a fire, burnt up the s/n records. I have read that attempts have made to reconstruct the records. I haven't seen any results. That leaves us to compare our numbers to that of a rifle of known age. T/C changed things that also can determine an age range.

Nobody can tell you how many were made, not even TC.   As PA said, all ML records were lost in the '97 plant fire.    The main manufacturing building was heavily razed and other buildings destroyed, including the ML stock making shop, barrel machine and blueing shop, the repair shop, router shop, machine oil and powder storge, test fire shop, etc.

Can tell you not very many Cougars were made because it was dropped so soon after being introduced, a strong indication that they were not selling because of asking price.   So they were a very short lived model, only cataloged in 1986 and 1987 if I remember.   Might have still been some on shelves for a few years after with deaerls or even TC as they did not loose thier completed firearms wharehouse in the fire.   But what's out there is all there is.    There are other TC models that are far rarer, but this is a great score.   Serious collectors would pay a premium for a Cougar in mint condition, way more if still NIB.    So you most certainly did get this one for a good price.    BTW, it's high grade stock would have been from wood processed in TC's own sawmill and dried in their kilns before going to their stock shop.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Thanks much, guys. Only other T/C I have is a Cherokee 32 cal.

I've picked up various Italian and Spanish guns (good and not so good) over the years but never came across anything I'd call a bargain on a T/C rifle in excellent condition. TIme to sell a few of my lesser BP rifles now...

Had a new one in 88,sold it through shotgun news for $375. There was a time,as inlines got popular, that side lock guns didn't bring much, soft market. It was the prettiest T/C I ever owned,Still have a renegade I bought from Midsouth new for $132.13,about 1986. I have succumbed to the modern style ML's now and shoot savage smokeless.

Hope mine shoots as well as yours, IB. I thought about just packing it away since it's unfired, but that's no fun.  :)

IB,

Coincidentially, I was recently looking at the PA Conicals myself. Wholesale Hunter has them pretty cheap...
