T/C Encore 209x50 modified breach plug
« on: November 03, 2003, 02:20:05 PM »
Hi,

I have been thinking about buying a 209x50 Encore and while doing my research as to accuracy, cost and comparison to NEF Handi-Rifle  I came across this link: http://prbullet.com/hornet.htm

They make a modified 209x50 breech plug that uses a hornet 22 case instead of a 509 primer.  Modified breech plug is suppose to increase accuracy and be cleaner.  Have any of you 209x50 users tried this, any positive results?

Thanks in advance

Pat

I found the same site and they told em they can do this to my 209x50 bullberry barrel. I was thinking about having one made up for it but it is not cheap it is like about $90 with everything.

If you get blowback into your action (firing pin assembly) the mod offers better sealing and may block all blowback.  If you do not get much in that regard, I would suggest you get hold of some Remington 209-4 .410 primers and give those a try.   The 209-4s are a bit hard to find but offer a less energetic ignition source.  If those help your accuracy, the Hornet mod might help even more as the small rifle primer is certainly weaker yet.

Enough evolution and we'll be back to good ol' #11s.   :)

It is internal blowback referred to-- not external.

Just recently received my modified breech plug.  this morning was my first chance to shoot it.  I'm shooting .50 Encore with .358 Dead Center bullets (175gr) and duplex sabots with 777 powder.  All components(bullets, sabots, powder, and modified breech plug) are new to my equation, so evalueating any one component by itself will be difficult if not impossible.  First of all, I had to shorten the 22 Hornet cases from .660 to about .645 to get a good lock-up with my action.  Getting my trimmer down that short was a challenge but we made it.  So, was it worth it?  Well, accuracy was fair at best.  About 2" 5 shot groups at 100yds.  But I was shooting in a gusting cross wind and only a 4 power scope of questionable quality with my aging eyes.  Next I got out the chrono to see what was really happening.  With 115gr(volume measure) of the 777 she clocked an average of 2037fps with a sd of 13.  Now I have very little experience chronoing anything w/ black powder or substitutes, but a sd of 13 on anything impresses me.  I'm eager to bolt on a good scope of more power and shoot under good conditions to see what this combination really can do.  May have to wait until after black powder season is over though.  Right now I,m more interested in how those Dead Centers perform on deer.  Hope to report on that soon.

You don't need to trim the cases down, just snap the action closed on each case.  You only have to do this process one time for each case.

Afterwards the action will close normally....atleast mine does.  If you trim the Hornet case any further than the lenght you received from PRbullet, you may not get a good seal and cause some additional problems.

Are you guys happy with your 22 hornet breech plug conversion?  My 209 primers (winchester) have shot gas out of my new Encore action and cut a fine line in my scope.  I want something cleaner and less robust.  DJay

I purchased the .22 Hornet plug in hopes of getting improved accuracy with my loads.  I have found out that the loads I did get good accuracy (1" @100yds) gave me 2" groups or worse.  I talked to Cecil yesterday and he stated that I will have to again start working on a new bullet/powder combination that works with the new .22 Hornet case.

Based upon my experience with my Encore, I wouldn't purchase the converted plug.  I'd keep with the 209's.  Which is what I am leaning to right now and just keep the Hornet plug in the box.

I have been using winchester primers and get all kinds of gunk in the action.  Do you get any accumulation of carbon from the federal primers in your action?   DJay

DJay, I use Winchester 209 primers also. I have never tried the Federal's. I bought a brick of 209 Winchester primers for my Encores and I have not had any problems at all with gunk in the action.

Redhawk 1,
There is something blowing out of my action.  I looked at the bottom my scope and notice that a fine line had been cut into the tubing of the scope.  It was right above the line where the barrel meets the receiver.  It appears that the only thing that could have happened was that enought hot gas jetting out of the action to etch the scope.  I scrubbed the line making sure it just wasn't a carbon deposit but it's an honest to goodness etched line.  I might have to send it back to T/C, there might be more to this than I should be messing around with.  Do you or any of the other readers have any type of marks on your scopes directly above the line where the barrel meets the receiver?   DJay
