I'm in trouble now!
« on: July 27, 2012, 01:53:40 PM »
Just got in from the local pawn shop that always has a few Handie's but never in calibers I'm looking for. Well, today they had  a new 7mm-08 that just screamed "buy me". So,$260 later , its mine, well almost. The NICS background check got delayed (again),but in a few days we'll get started. I've never really broke in a new rifle bore before so I want to do it right. I've read all the FAQ's and tips and plan on cleaning, fireing 3-5 rounds and lapping with J-B paste and Kroil . Does this sound reasonable?

Only other experience with a Handie was a .243 loaner that I relived forearm pressure and worked up a handload for. Made a tack driver out of it. The  owner saw us shoot it and wanted it back!

As for  being in trouble, before I left the shop today I asked them to check the price of a 30-30. Said it probably will be the same price and will let me know when I pick up the 7mm-08. Haven't even got it home yet and I'm addicted

Yeah, you are in deep.  I have never done anything to a Handi except clean the factory gunk out of it and shoot it.  I wouldn't lap it unless it wouldn't tighten up after 50 or 100 rounds.  Frankly, I haven't had to lap any of them.  I have polished a chamber here and there and that's about it.  Usually, by the time I get done sighting them in and playing a bit they're fine.  Ya gotta understand though, I'm lazy.  I don't do anything til I have to ::)   My handis shoot best on the cruddy side.  They seldom get cleaned.  If I can see daylight down the bore they're good to go :o ??? ::) ::) ;)

Good luck with your new toy....enjoy.

Pete

I don't think I ever met a handi that did not like to be a little cruddy.

Break-in?  What's that?  Just shoot the darn thing, then clean it every 25 to 30 rounds if you get the time.  Mine get cleaned twice ayear if they need it or not.  Then usually shot within a week.  But then again I live in an arid climate.  Things just don't rust here.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
