Smith and Wesson screw question
« on: January 29, 2004, 01:29:51 PM »
Does anybody know the size of the large headed screw that holds the top the sideplate on the older 5 screw pistols. No..it is not the 5-44 that is used for the other side plate screws..it is smaller. Better yet, does anybody have a screw this size 1/8 inch or longer?

You might try S&W on this one.  If they don't have one(I'm gonna guess they won't) try the parts houses.  I look in my 'box 'o screws' but don't think I have one..

I have emailed Smith and Wesson and I will see if I get a response. I don't need a factory screw. I have one of the old adjustable sights that attach to the revolver by means of this screw hole. The sight is NIB, but the screw got lost. I just need to know the size, so I can get one, and cut it off to fit. The factory screw is too short to work.

If worse comes to worse just try the screws until you find one that fits...  If you don't have any luck just check back and I'll make a couple of phone calls.  I don't have much faith in S&W.  From my latest experience their service department is truly poor, and what a shame..  At one time S&W had the best service in the country, then greed got to them I guess..

The problem is I don't have any screws and the local hardware and home improvment stores don't carry small machine screws. I ordered a bunch of 5-44s from Brownells and will order some of the right size, but I need to know what size I need. Any help would be appreciated.

Life would be a lot easier with metric isn't ? An M3 for a Beretta can fit a Browning from Japan, Belgium or a Baikal from Russia and can be found anywhere.  And only a few standard size to choose from

The top large headed side plate screw on 5 screw Smith and Wessons is 3-48 as per Brownell Tech folks. The other screws are 5-44, which is also the current size. Never got a reply from Smith and Wesson..jeeeze!!

Well S&W's lack of response is not unexpected.  I had a really nice M60 and the hammer pivot broke.  The hammer pivot is supported by the sideplate so that there is nearly no side load at all!  It was an early gun and service representative first said that S&W didn't have a warrantee when that particular revolver was made.  I asked if they did not have a materials and worksmanship warrantee and they agreed to fix the piece..  Then I got a bill for $140!!  A call to question the charge for a warrantee repair and I was told these break commonly and they have to charge that much to refinish the piece.  It's STAINLESS, refinish amounted to a quick buff, and they left a ring around the new stud when they pressed it into place, by pressing in too far I believe.  It took them nearly 8 weeks!!!  Also they sprung the sideplate at some point..  The S&W management wants us to believe the 'old' Smith is back, it's not!!  I'll not buy a new S&W anything nor do I advise anyone else to either..  Buy Taurus..  Those Tech guys at Brownells are always out to please!!

At last I received a reply from Smith and Wesson. They said they didn't have any and to try GunParts Corp. I hit the reply button and told them to read the email. I said I wanted to know the size of the screw. I did not say I wanted to buy one. Well I bought a dozen of the screw from Lyman and will shorten one to my needs.
