Small nipple on my fired primers
« on: May 21, 2012, 12:47:44 PM »
I have a Rossi 357 mag. single shot and I am getting a nipple on my primers.  The nipple looks like it is from the primer going back into the firing pin hole.  I am shooting factory ammo and I can see no signs of over pressure.  I really like this little gun and I hope it is not a loss.  I have fired several different factory loaded rounds and all have the nipple.  The gun shoots well and is very fun.   I NEED SOME HELP.  Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the pin is not supporting the primer.. Is the firing pin a snug fit in the firing pin hole.. You are correct though that this is a problem. The nipple you refer to is an incipient pierced primer and in most break action guns there is precious little gas flow control. This leaves you vulnerable to serious injury is a primer actually pierces. You may need the services of their customer service department..

Pastortom,

Yep, a problem!!!!!!

If you were hand loading, it could be a sign of overly high pressures, OR a softer then normal metal in the primer cup, OR an ill fitting fire pin.

In your case where you are shooting factory ammo, and have shot a number of different factory loads, I'd say you have a firearm problem which needs to be taken care of ASAP, before you end up with a pearced primer.

The problem could be from an over sized firing pin hole or possibly a weaker then normal firing pin spring.  It does however, sound to me like the hole is over sized which in turn does not allow for the proper and NEEDED support of pressures during firing.

This is allowing the metal of the primer cup to extrude back into the firing pin hole at the time of firing.

Keep em coming!

Thanks for the replies.  I bought this gun used, will this need to be fixed at the factory or is it something a gunsmith can do.  I just didn't know if the factory would honor a warrenty after buying it used.  It takes me a while to check up on my posts ,so thanks for replies.

I'd contact the manufacture!!!!!!!!!!

A good manufacture will take care of the problem, as  they don't want the bad press on their product!

They might want you to send them some images of the problem or some sample of cases fired in your gun.

If the latter is the case, send brass from different makers which will help show this is not just you getting ahold of some odd ball and higher pressure ammo from one company.

Keep us posted!
