Armed Services Chair McKeon Torches Democrats on Defense Cuts    Defense spending cuts scheduled to kick in next year would "do what no other external enemy could — cripple our economy and defenses in a single blow,” House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon has blasted.

And Democrats are doing nothing to help the GOP reverse the planned reductions, which sould cause grave harm to national security and the economy, the California Republican added in a piece he wrote for Politico.

“America would have its smallest ground force since before World War II, its smallest Navy since before World War I, and its smallest Air Force in the history of the service,” McKeon says in the article. “Sequestration would limit America’s power and influence in the world and restrict our ability to defend vital interests.”

As for the economy, “sequestration’s impact would be sudden and severe,” he writes. “The Bipartisan Policy Center estimated in a recent report that sequestration would result in the loss of about 1 million jobs in 2013 and 2014 and a half a percent cut to America’s already meager economic growth.”

House Republicans have done what they can to solve the problem, such as offering a reconciliation package passed by the House that would eliminate sequestration for 2013.

But when it comes to the other side of the aisle, “for all their talk of balanced solutions and the urgent need for compromise, President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats have offered nothing but vague talking points about revenues and tax increases,” McKeon writes.

“When we should urgently be coming together, Democrats are cynically running out the clock, hoping to use the threat of devastating cuts to our military to pass a domestic agenda that has little public support.”

The cuts were imposed in a bid to force the bipartisan "super committee's" hand as it tried to come up with a solution to the debt crisis last year. When the committee failed they went into effect automatically.
