Well we are getting one or two new fires every day right now. The oldest is the one by Fort Collins, newest is the one by Boulder. My daughters FIL, who is also my hunting pard may be having to evacuate from one of the fires west of Colo Springs. There is enough smoke in the air to cause burning eyes at times and some breathing problems. Right now a strong wind is blowing across Aurora, east of Denver. It was 105 today, 105 yesterday, 5 days of over 100 in a row. Usually it would be in the 80's. This is dry lightning, which is what caused several of these fires. The rest is a lot of beetle kill, no natural thinning fir 100 years and too mnay damn people. Son went up to Rocky Mountain PaRK Suaturday, couldn't get too far as the roads were closed most places. That fire was caused by a power line rubbing a tree.
For those of you who don't know the area, the mountains are steep, thinly vegetated with brush and pines. The" soil'".is sand gravel, with nothing to hold it after fire, so when it does rain it will flood big time. One of the fires was out in the prairie east of here. This would be a wheat field, hay/grass, and some scrub burning. There is a big difference tween the mountains most associate with Colorado and the short grass prairie. The third topography is high desert plateau.
Kids and the other grandpa have a tentative camping trip set for July. No weiner roasts this year. I really want to get up there is I can, too.
