Gas guzzling motorhomes
« on: January 24, 2011, 08:59:57 AM »
Anyone still use one of these.  ;D I used to have a old one, a Winnebago. Sure made a nice hunting camp.

Travel trailers make nice hunting camps as well. What do you use?

I have a 86 Jayco pop up.  that sucker gets cold at night but it will keep your butt dry.  just bring plenty of wool army blankets.  My daughter complains and sees the big nice travel trailers but I sure do like collapsing that little camper, pulling it behind my truck like its not even there and then rolling it out of the way once I get home.
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

My wife had a dream last month that we sold our house and furniture, cashed out our savings, paid  up our life and LTC policies, put asside something for the kids, and bought a nice motor home.  Don't know how she will get her closet and shoes inside, or how I'll move my firearms and reloading stuff, she put us on the road to see America.

Charles, I've been having the same dream. It changes every night though. One night motorhomes the next sailboat.  8)

I had an old class C 23 footer. Got 10MPG. I guess I could have lived with that, but I kept running into things with it. Now I have a pop up pick up camper. The wife and I lived in it for a month when we made a trip to the east coast. Sometimes I take it hunting. If I leave the end gate on the pickup, I can tie a couple deer or antellope on it. Lots easier on the gas.

I had a nice 28 ft Holiday Rambler 5th wheel.
I say had because the insurance company totaled it because of a roof leak.
Seems the parent company, Monaco, went into bankruptcy.
You couldn't find parts for them anymore.
I'm not sure if we will buy another.

We love our 'A-Liner'. We have been the route and 30sec up for a 'hardsided' house for two is fantastic. My tow vehicles have only suffered about a 10% loss in fuel economy.

I'd seen a ex-US Army M109 6x6 that'd had a camper set in the cargo box

Should not have any problem getting to the campsite with that rig.

Back in the '80s I had a 25 foot Class C that my oldest son finally finished scrapping last week.  It was pretty handy for things like hunting but the last few years the water finally got the better of it.

Later, we had a 36 foot fifth wheel but it was too big to get into most places I hunt.  When the kids got older and preferred a week of kayak touring or backpacking to sitting in a campground we sold it.

The oldest son and I collect military Vehicles.  He has an M109A3 chassis with a large aluminum box on it that used to house a water purification plant that he converted into an RV.

My off-road RV is an S-280 communications shelter fitted out as a camper.  We boom into an M35A2C 2-1/2 ton or M813A1 five ton truck using a wrecker crane.  The trucks are all 6x6s.  My two trucks have PTO driven winches with 200 feet of cable for self recovery.

Here's a link to the S-280.  Mine got the windows and appliances from the Class C RV and has a double bed/dinette with 6" memory foam cushions.  The rooftop AC would have been way too high so it has a standard house AC unit in the front wall so it extends over the cab.  I've still got to fabricate a brush guard around it.

http://www.gichner.us/s-280.html

The trucks aren't really much wider than a dually pickup truck so the height is usually the limiting factor off-road.

The two deuce and a halfs get about 10 MPG and the five ton truck get about 6-7 MPG.  Not exactly economy vehicles but there is a lot to be said for 6x6 in rough country and snow.  With a with a full set of tire chains they will push snow with the winch and bumper.

With all that said, we have tent camped year-round and can get along just fine that way pretty much regardless of the weather.  That will never be as easy as pushing one button to level the 36 footer and another to drop the awning for fast easy camp setup though....
