I Went To The Woods Yesterday
« on: July 03, 2012, 04:37:15 AM »
It was 96 here yesterday!  lol  AND, my helper came over, so off we went to the woods!

I had walked in a week or so ago and found a few white pine i wanted to cut out,

FIRST, we had to cut a road into them and we did that first thing in the morning,

And then with the heat of the day upon us, i only cut one of them down,

I sawed out two 16'-6" logs and one 8 footer.  I'll mill a couple 6" x 8's out of the 8 footer to put lumber on.  Now the skidding begins,

And i had to skid down a VERY steep hill,  (even in 4WD, my tractor couldn't climb this hill, so i had to go waaaaay around to get back on top for each "skid")

to get to my "log hauling" running gear.  WOW, we had no idea how hot it was until we got out of the woods and into the sun!!

Once loaded, we still had to go up "sugar sand hill" to get to the road and the tractor spun all 4 wheels all the way to the top of the hill!

Finally we were on out to the road, with our two big logs and a little firewood,

Takeing them to the BSM, where we will mill them into lumber soon!

  Hope you like the picts!

I always enjoy your pics!   ;D

Speaking of which, what ever happened to that unbelieveably beautiful spalted, burley and narly tree by the creek that got cut down a while back?

DM, I wish I was there to help just so I could learn something about sawing logs. Does working the logs with the front loader seem to put excessive load on the tractor front end? The old 806 IH that I used to drive wouldn't take much turning with it's poor designed front axel setup. What size tractor is that? ear

That tree was/is my neighbors, and although i milled some of it, most of it is still lieing at his house...

As for the frontend of my tractor...  I bought my loader tractor new in the 90's, and one of the things i looked at, before buying it, was how beefy the front end was.  I knew what i was going to use the tractor for, so i chose the best i could afford, and it's held up perfectly!

I do lift/carry some extreme loads, but i don't beat on it needlessly!

I Managed To Mill Those Logs
« Reply #6 on: July 10, 2012, 02:31:24 AM »
Well, it cooled off some, it only got up to 89* yesterday!  lol

An arborist friend  brought me some logs a few days ago, so i started out with the FREE log, second from the right in this pict., a very nice blk. spruce,

and i got some pretty nice 2x6's and 2x10's out of it, for myself!

Then i moved on to the white pine i logged the other day, here's one of those two 16 footers,

I "wanted to" get TWO 2x12's out of the "side" lumber, then mill the rest into 3x8's, but i could only comfortably get one 2x12 along with some 5/4,

I ended up with a "miscut" that i threw under the forks, but that will used builting a goat feeder a friend asked me to help him build,

Anyway, here's what i got out of "this" log, 3x8's, 5/4 boards and one 2x12...

And here's all the lumber i milled, loaded on my wagon, mine on the right and my customer friends on the left,

Well, i'm chipping away at the materials list i have to fill, and it's been one loooooong list!!
