My H&R 922 revolver. now with pics of it
« on: December 01, 2011, 01:22:15 PM »
Awhile back i purchased a H&R 922 22cal revolver thats 9 shot with a 6'' barrel.  I cleaned it a took it to the range.  It shot but itjammed from a lead shaving stuck in the cylinder.  Upon returning home I took it apart and noticed the serial number on the cylinder is missmatched to the serial number on the gun.  The cylinder loc lever also had some wear on it also.  The cylinder was a tad loose when locked up.  I looked down the bore and seen the cylinder was offset to the bore a tad.  One option was to open the throat on the barrel but i didn't want to do that.  I ordered a new cylinder loc lever/spring and installed it today.  Now its almost a perfect fit and the bore appears to be lined up to the cylinder much better now.  It cuts down the play alot too in the loc up.  Maybe i got lucky but it appears to be shootable now.   Stupid me i didn't check the numbers on the cylinder to see if they matched.  We learn something new all the time.  This H&R was very very affordable now i can see why. I know how to move the slots in the cylinder a tad too without seeing any marks too if i have too but it looks really close now.  Now i can apply my machine building experiences to gun repairing now.  Its not the same but the parts are a lot smaller. Its 200,000lb cnc machines to guns that may weigh a 1lb or two.  The machines can be accurate to the millionths while the gun shoots groups in inches.  Its not just splitting hairs.                   Bill

I have the loc up very close and probably like it was orginally.  The new cylinder loc and some tweeking on the cylinder(fitting the new loc into all the slots) did the trick so far.  The PO almost screwed up the cylinder when all he needed was a new cylinder loc.  But i got it for almost free so its not a bad deal.  Its an older 922 with the octagon barrel.

Sounds good. Post a pic when you get it running!

I am amazed just how good mine shoots!!! I even shot it one night at a bulls eye match practice, 210 outta 300, I am a solid 280+ shooter with most guns. Not too shabby I thought for a 3" DA revolver with crude oPen sights!  I could hit a pop can every time from 10-15 yards. NO problem.

I need to take it apart again and lube the sear and internals with moly.  That will smooth out the trigger and the harsh double action.  Its no S&W masterpiece but i think it will hold its own.  Its getting better everytime i work on it.

If you guys post your serial numbers - I can tell you approx. year of manufacture, Model and Variation - lots of different variations from circa 1925 to 1986.

Mine has a "P" prefix and 5 digits located on the botton of the grip frame.

I expect it to be a late 60's or early 70's gun.

Chefjeff,
'AH' = 1971.  It is a 1st Model (1956 - 1973).

My H&R 922 with the 6'' octagon barrel has an "M" infront of the serial number.  I'm not sure of the year.  Something is telling me to get another one while there still affordable/cheap. CZY

1911,
The 'M' prefix stands for 1952.
Go for it, while you still can.  Don't hesitate, run out of the house right now - GO GO GO  ??? ::) ;)

ChefJeff,
The Model 603 is one of the few H&R handguns of which I've never owned an example.  Yes, they are very scarce.  That's the one with the flat sided 6" barrel, isn't it?
AY = 1982

   Greetings!

   My first store bought revolver is an  H&R 732, .32 S&W L, swing-out cylinder, Blue, 2" Bbl. I bought it brand new in the early 80's, and
I still have the box and paperwork. I've subsequently acquired an identical revolver in nickel, but in the Pull-Pin style. A few years later
came another earlier swing-out 9-shot in .22LR, but with the hammer mounted firing pin.I have found that the .32's handle my handloads
as well as factory cartridges; the .22 handles shorts, longs, and long rifle cartridges just fine. I would like to land a 4" or 6" barreled model to
try.
   When I worked in the Gun Shop, these H&R's and Iver Johnson's sold very quickly to guys that could afford "Name Brand" revolvers... If I
didn't get to them first! As soon as I get a set of reloading dies, I intend to shoot my Iver Johnson 55 SA -Cadet- 5-shot chambered for the
little .38S&W, and see what it can do.
   The H&R and Iver Johnson solid frame revolvers are made for work, and they look that way. To me, they aren't cheap looking in the least:
they exude a type of "working man's esthetic", be he (or her!) a blue-collar worker looking for an affordable defense arm, a fisherman's friend,
or hunter's back-up, a camper's unobtrusive "pot-gun", or a trappers 'coup de grace' line gun. Just plain neat!

                  Be Well!

My H&R 929 has SN AF446__.  Can you tell me when it was made?  I bought it new, I think in the late 60's.  It still works great, at least now it does after I replaced the plastic thingy that the spring and hammer used to push on each other with a steel one.
