1911 grips, making your own!
« on: April 09, 2012, 03:01:29 PM »
Been playing around trying my hand at 1911 grips! Getting those darn holes lined up has been a chore but I think I'm there.

Nice work David.  And less wood than the Contender grip sets!

I like the wood used on a couple of those - could you put a label to the various woods used  ?

Yes, Its a drilling jig. Any machinist worth his salt can make you one. Without that its hit and miss. I haven't bummed a set of holes since getting mine.

Thanks. That is what I was hoping for to point me in the right direction.

Can you post a picture of the jig?

I have no picture but I can describe. Length or width doesn't really matter that much as long it has two holes  9/32" at 3-1/16" dead center. Mine is about the same size and shape of a grip panel. It is 1/2" thick and made from heat treated tool steel to keep the bit from eating it up. If mild steel is used then it will need drill guides in it as the bit would soon eat the holes out larger. I use a cordless drill with mine. The first hole you can drill without the guide. After drilling the first hole I pin the drill guide to the wood with a 9/32" transfer punch then drill the second hole through the drill guide.
