« on: January 16, 2011, 02:22:02 PM »
Have any of you predator hunters ever used one of those pop up blinds?? Just throw it out and it pops up,Do you think that would bother a bobcat or coyote something there not use to seeing, i dont think it would bother a yote as much as a cat.Whats your guys thoughts on this? i have a few places that has some old home steds that has bobcats there but the old trees and cover just dont have the right set up for calling, and was wondering if a person could get back off from the cover and use 1 of them pop up blinds

Ameristep I believe. Got it at cabelas a couple years ago. Best thing I ever bought!!  I use it all the time. I used to only tree stand hunt. But back in '03 I was in a bad auto accident and badly damaged a couple ribs and cracked vertebra where the ribs attach to my spine. Making climbing near impossible. As I healed I thought i was fine, until I got stuck up in a tree.... See I could climb, but couldn't let my legs hang with the extra weight of the lower portion of the stand. That's all I owned, climbers. I could use fixed stands with a ladder or pegs but not a climber so I tried a couple different blinds. I found the bigger ones spooked game unless you left them out for them to become accustomed to seeing them. Not so with my little chair blind!! I have had turkeys close enough to touch with a gun barrel, young deer too. Older ones look at it, but generally are not too alarmed. They are light weight and convent. I love to back them into the top of a downed tree. You know with my back to a large crotch. Then I pull a couple limbs across it to breakup the outline. It nicely breaks the wind so scent is minimized too. The chair is the common fold up style so common today during summer events. They are all really similar. Even two seaters are available !!

I never wanted one before because I have only seen the big ones.
One place I hunt is young 5-6' tall pine trees bordering open fields.
This would be perfect.

CW,
Do you sit in the chair and it pops up around you?
Is the room for your stuff on the floor?
Do you need to pin it down every time?
Does it keep rain out, mostly, or is it just for hiding?

Powpow,
It does do a good job of keeping weather off you!! I spray mine with camping sealer, you know the stuff for tents. I found some specific stuff for hunters at cabelas last year. It's not quite as good but dissent smell at all. My stuff necessitates your spraying way before season and allowing it to air out.

I carry a pretty large pack. Say 20" x 14" x 8" thick. It fits inside just fine.

You slide it out of the pouch, un clasp it and open just like a chair. Sit down and it opens rite over your head. Very cool!

No, I do not stake it down. But I would if I was leaving it set up with out me there.

This time of year places offer them at much refused prices. I will be getting a second myself once I see the $$ go down. They are not super expensive. Under 100$. I got this one for about half that.

I also have a " rifle" pop up but do not like it nearly as well although it is cheaper. You can stand up in it but it dosent come with a chair and has nearly the same foot print.

Check out your retailer, most have them set out on display. They are a great assert to my hunting arsenal.

I was looking at one of those yesterday ($80)and the one that folds up($50) and when you toss it on the ground it pops up.thought I would check out the new hunting area before I commit to one . but the smaller one  didn't look as confining, uses a stool instead of a chair.

So i take it that none of you predator hunters have ever used the pop up blinds like the dog house the bigger ones like you bow hunt deer with.I dont think it would bother a coyote like it would a bobcat, so please talk about the bigger blinds if you could, not just about the chair blind the reason i want to know about the bigger 1 me and a buddy call togerther not just by myself Thanks

Backstrap, They will work very well (same as for deer) as I have owned two with my latest being the Remington Stricker blind.

Would I take it Coyote hunting?...NO, it is portable but not enough for one who makes it out three times a week or better, at this point it would be more of a hassle on the setup and breakdown.

Neighboor has one of the chair blinds like cwlongshot mentions, very light and portable and would let you move quickly. Perhaps both you and your partner could get one?...space them a little so that you can cover both that draw to your right and the hillside to your left and the pasture ground that lies in between?

I bought one of th esingle chair units at Dcks Sporting goods, they were normally 100, had them half price...Ameristep brand..

I like mine.......keeps the wind off you , masks subtle movement, if you spray it down with scent killer, and tuck it in close to a tree, or scrub, like you woudl  a ground blind in S Texas.......get it looking like it belongs there.....and you have a chance of getting some traffic by you

Recieved a gift card to Bass Pro today.
Ran out and got an Ameristep one-man chair blind.
They bush hogged our green fields so the grass is short enough to see the quiver rabbit.
Gonna try to call in a yote next Saturday.

I have one of the biger ones you are asking about and unless I was sitting over a dedicated bait pile I wouldn't waste my time.  Even later in the season when stands may require 30 minutes or more it is simply to much hassle.  Just another thing to have to setup quitely and then another thing to pickup at the end of stand.  Personally I like to be quitely setup in less than 5 minutes and picked up and on to my next stand in less than 3 min.

My gun, shells, foxpro, mouth calls, knife, range finder(if hunting during the day), bogtripod or shooting sticks(if using rifle over shotgun), extra gloves, and water are all I try to take when I head out.  Due to lower lumbar surgery at the end of last month I will probably have to add a seat of some type this season.  Going to wait until closer to season to see how much support I need and try to go again as small and light as possible

Yea, I know this is an old thread, but I would like to make an input.  I bought one of those last August.  Got ready to take it out and use it when it dawned on me that I had no way of checking behind me.    I live in grizzly country, not a good idea to not be able to see what is in back of you.  Even backed up against a tree, or bush, could still be a hazard.  Trying to talk my buddy into getting one so we can sit together facing opposite directions.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

even in non bear country you can get messed up. turkey hunters here get mauled by bobcats and I know one fox hunter that had a fox jump on him from behind.
